Went to the Steak Knife last night with friends. The place was packed, the bar packed. First time I have been since Katrina back at their original location.
They did a beautiful job re-doing the place.
Had the eggplant appetizers, husband had the flash fried oysters, both excellent. We got a ribeye steak. Very weird, the waiter announces to our group, we will not be serving baked potato or asparagus tonight. We had 7:00 reservations, so its not like they ran out.
Find that really unusual that a steak place would not have baked potato's. When we question the phrasing of "we will not be serving baked potato" he reiterated the exact phrase. Wonder if they got a bad batch of potato's and asparagus.

They just reopened! The Dean has told us repeatedly to wait six months before dining at a newly opened restaurant! (jk)

Actually Jeeves, Tom recently mentioned dining at the Steak Knife in his newsletter:eek:. And he talked briefly about Sobol? sp? from frankie's cafe.
That said, I grew up in the area and was never a fan of the Steak Knife, but great to see them doing so well:). Their bar was always a happening place for singles.

Frankie was married to Joe Sobol, the one Tom ran into at Steak Knife. They operated two places, Frankie's in Bucktown and another on Hampson where Restaurant One is today. He and his brother, Nick, both worked at Mandina's early in their careers. Joe is in construction nowadays, Nick owns Mick's Irish Pub on Bienville. It's been too many years, but I have fond memories of a very nice dinner there pre-K with some good friends, and retiring to the bar afterwards for cigars, cognac, and music from a jazz trio.

I remember pre-K going there for after dinner drinks cause the bar scene was nice.
I agree if you are single, this is a happening bar, it was 7:00 and the people around the bar were obviously on the "look-out" I had to pass the bar on the way to the restroom. In the rest room, two older women, my age, were in there talking like high school girls. "Oh, do you think he is interested in me, should I let him buy me dinner, etc, etc."
I guess since I have been married so long, I found it humorous.
