My GF and I wanted sushi the other night and decided to check out Gimchi since we were at Barnes & Noble and it was nearby. I knew that these are the same people who own Mikimoto on Carrollton Ave, which is a favorite of ours, so we weren't really taking a big chance.
We ordered from the sushi menu, which appeared to be the same menu from Mikimoto, which was fine with us. I started with a spicy tuna salad and then had sashimi, a dynamite roll, and a hawaii five o roll. The spicy tuna salad was good, but I did notice that is seemed to have less chunks of tuna in it than the same salad over at Mikimoto. The sashimi was delicious. It was very fresh and served at just the right temp for me. The rolls were also good.
GF had the salmon bake and I don't recall what kind of rolls, but she thought they were good.
The restaurant itself was very nice looking, although the tables seemed to be a little close....I may have got that impression, however, b/c we were seated next to a young family with 2 kids(probably a 4 and 6 year old) who weren't very well behaved. I almost objected when we were sat, but the only other open table that I could see was next to a table of 4 male teenagers who were cutting up rather loudly and seemed to think it was funny to make the flames from their in table grill shoot up high. Either way, it wasn't going to be nice.
Luckily, the family next to us finished and left right after the salad came out. Right before we finished, another young family with 2 small kids were sat next to us. We finished soon after.
Apparently this place is popular with the young families. All in all though, a good sushi restaurant for the Metairie area. Nothing spectacular, but good. Much preferred over Sake Cafe. Will still probably frequent Kyoto2 more, but only b/c it's closer to the house. Whenever we're over in the Lakeside area, we'll try Gimchi again. Used to go to Hanna in that area, but quite frankly, Fat City has become quite scary.

Globe 9, thanks for the report. Where exactly is Gimchi?
Wondering where Hanna is? I rarely go to Metairie these days.
One of my favs for sushi is Kanno in Fat City, but it's been a while since I've made the trek. I am interested in your comment about Fat City being scary. What's going on that is concerning you? Is it mainly at night? Thanks!

Gimchi is right off of Vets. at N. Turnbull in the old India Palace location. It's right behind where the Safari Car Wash used to be(they tore it down).Isabella Maja wrote:Globe 9, thanks for the report. Where exactly is Gimchi?

Oops...when I wrote Hanna, I meant Kanno, which is in Fat City in that little strip mall. Hanna is the sushi place Uptown right off of Carrollton Ave.
Fat City, especially at night, does not appear to be too safe. There are MANY Mexicans(not that I'm against Mexicans or anything), but they all appear to be drunk and move around in packs. Last time I went to Kanno, I was yelled at by a group of about 5 Mexicans who were stumbling through the parking lot. I really did not feel safe at all. There are many robberies in the area and most of these Mexicans are illegals. They may be harmless, but as a woman, I did NOT feel safe in the area.

Had you not repeated the term "Mexican" 4 times, and perhaps substituted the word "people", you might have come off as far less bigoted.globe9 wrote:There are MANY Mexicans(not that I'm against Mexicans or anything), but they all appear to be drunk and move around in packs. I would also have felt unsafe in your situation. I would not have attributed the difficulty to people's race, ethnicity, nationality, or immigrant status, but rather their lack of sobriety, pack mentality, and the current economic climate.

I drove through Fat City Monday afternoon around the time school let out, and I was struck by the sheer number of parents I saw out waiting for their kids....a veritable UN of parental oversight. The density of affordable housing has made the neighborhood a magnet for new immigrants of every stripe.
It's the density of bars & strip clubs that blight the area, IMHO.

Re: Gimchi's Sushi Menu Review
I drove out to Fat City in 1970, and the density of bars and strip clubs was mind boggling! Most of the people had on Leisure suits, with huge collars, white belts and white shoes! Many of the clubs had carpet (shag) from floor to ceiling! I freaked out! I cranked up the Austin-Healey and headed back to the French Quarter, and have NEVER returned!
Can anyone tell me if things have improved in this area? Is it better to go in daylight hours? Do they still have the lights "FAT CITY" on those huge electric towers? Are the apartments in the area still filled with those cute little stewardesses?
TIA!

Re: Gimchi's Sushi Menu Review
Maybe I should have used the word "illegals" instead of Mexicans, b/c these are not families of hispanic origin that are wandering around drunk at 8pm at night in large groups...these are male "people" staggering around yelling at me and my friends in broken English/Spanish. If not for the many robberies, fights, burgarlies in the area, I would not be afraid by large groups of people stumbling around drunk. I'm not afraid at Mardi Gras or at any Uptown bar near the campuses where there are large groups of males, who are drunk and staggering and may yell something at me and my friends, but they aren't in the crime section everyday for criminal acts....other than maybe a DWI.paz5559 wrote:Had you not repeated the term "Mexican" 4 times, and perhaps substituted the word "people", you might have come off as far less bigoted.

I used to hang out in Fat City all the time prior to Katrina b/c 2 of my friends own bars in the area. Since Katrina, the crime got increasingly worse. Drugs, vandalism, knifings, etc. increased exponentially. I am friends with a J.P. who works the Fat City area and he says it is horrible and yes, most of them are not legal citizens according to him. He says they can't do anything about most of them(deportation). INS won't deport any illegal unless they commit a felony and are caught.
Anyway, the whole point of my 1st post is that I no longer frequent Kanno as much b/c I don't feel safe in that area and Kanno does not have a security detail in that parking lot.
