The Creole Creamery

Post by Pelican Six »

Had some time to kill with the kids uptown yesterday, so Household Six and I took the kids to the Creole Creamery on Prytania. Lots of unique flavors that are constantly changing. Ice creams, sorbets, gelatos, Italian ices, etc.

I had the "Cone of Uncertainty" - waffle cone lined with hot fudge, then a scoop of Cafe au Lait, crushed Oreos, scoop of Vanilla, scoop of Chocolate, then topped with chocolate sprinkles. As soon as I finished, I immediately wanted another, but a glare from the missus killed that idea.

It will require some training on my part, but I am determined to return to tackle the "Tchoupitoulas Sundae", an $18 behemoth that comes with immortality - your name engraved on a brass tag, to be mounted on the wall.

If any of you are Simpsons fans, think of the "Mount Bellyache" sundae at Phineas Q. Butterfat's 5600 Flavors Ice Cream Parlor.

The Red Velvet Cake ice cream also looked delicious. The chef is a big bear of a guy named Brian and he is really nice and knowledgable about his craft. Highly recommended.

I've been there twice in the last two weeks or so. Each time I got the mini-scoop sampler of 6 flavors, b/c I can never decide on just one. I did try the red velvet cake and it was yummy -- but then, they all were. DC got a chocolate malt on each visit -- made w/vanilla ice cream and chocolate syrup rather than with chocolate ice cream -- and they were fabulous, too. I am intrigued by the Tchoupitoulas Challenge but I don't know if I could manage it -- it's your choice of 8 scoops w/8 toppings, plus hot fudge syrup and whipped cream, and you have 1 hour to finish it. I'd enjoy trying though. :-)

I am not really a fan of this place. While some of the flavors are real good (try the black and gold crunch) far too many fall short of expectations. I can live with a miss now and then but some of their combos are head scratchingly bizarre and generally are as terrible as they sound.

I agree. Some of the flavors are spot-on (the hawaiian chocolate w/toasted coconut & macadamias, the dark chocolate ones in general), but others are kinda fakey-tasting. I think they're aiming for the neighborhood parents-n-kiddies demographic. La Divina blows 'em out of the water (I know, one is gelato, the other ice cream, so I'm not technically comparing apples to apples), and some of Gelato Pazzo's flavors are as good as La Divina's.

Stop 9's ice cream flavor selections are limited, but always very good.
