Seymour's
We had dinner tonight at Seymour's on Hickory. Everything was wonderful. Doug had the shrimp fettucine and decided it was the best he's had in a very long time. Ladywhowaits had the crawfish au gratin. It was wonderful..just a little too rich for me. Big ole lumps of crab meat though. I had a seafood platter that was big enough to have fed all three of us. It had fried fish, shrimp, stuffed shrimp and crabcakes on the platter.
This was a first trip for us and we'll definitely go back. Curious though..does anyone know how the bar is? We figured this might be a place we could hang out on a Saturday afternoon when it's too chilly to be out on a patio somewhere. Plus, it's fairly close to home.

Seymour's is generally great. When we do the seafood platter, CKD and I share it with an app or two added and still need a doggy bag. The only thing I don't care for is their gumbo - how they do the other stuff so well and fail the gumbo test is beyond me - I think "thin" is the proper descriptor for the gumbo. All their seafood (not just fried) is excellent. Also have killer burgers (seems to be a secret). The bar - dunno - but I know a lot of folks who enjoy it. Just has that old time corner neighborhood bar and grill feel. We really like it when we're in that mode.

Re: Seymour's
The few times I've been there I was not impressed. I've had their shrimp poboy and oyster poboy as well as the "cool down salad." The cool down salad is usually served at lunch and consists of shrimp three ways: remoulade, cocktail, and typical shrimp salad. It's OK but a little pricey and leaves you hungry. I still get it when I want to have a lite lunch on a hot Summer day.
The poboys were average in quality and very thin on quantity.
I'm curious, how would you rate their food to the other local neighborhood places like Seither's on Hickory in Harahan down by Jeff hwy., Charlie's Seafood on Jeff Hwy in Harahan, Village Inn on Jeff Hwy in River Ridge, and Bobby's on Jeff hwy in River Ridge?
My current ranking would be 1)Charlies 2)Village Inn 3)Bobby's 4)Seither's 5)Seymour's.

Re: Seymour's
Your rankings are a little hard, considering you are comparing Frank's new restaurant, Charles Seafood, to places like Village Inn. If you are talking po-boys, Seymours can't make a decent po-boy, but their other plate lunches and dinners are great. They do really good fried seafood, really good pasta dishes and eggplant dishes, but they can't do po-boys. As for their Cool Down Salad, I really like it. Bobby's does really good po-boys and their gumbo is great, but their fried seafood dinners can't hold a candle to Seymours. The restaurants you mentioned all have some dishes they do well and some they can't, but I would put Seymours second on your list only because of the trouble they have with po-boys. Charles seafood I can't rank because we have not been there yet, so based on Frank's reputation only, you can have first spot.
1) Charles Seafood
2) Seymours
3) Bobby's Seafood
4) Seither's
5) Village Inn

Ok, we've been to Charles Seafood twice..and wasn't impressed either time. Loved Seither's the first time we went..not so great the second. As for Bobby's and Village Inn..we've never been there. Do we need to try them?
Completely different type of restaurant..but, we love Mimi's in River Ridge.

Re: Seymour's
Yes, each of the River Ridge places has their "special" dish that may be better than some of the others, but I based my rankings on the common denominator, poboys. Doesn't mean I don't go to the other places, but overall I am confident that Charlie's belongs first. Here's what I order at each place now:kcdixiecat wrote:Ok, we've been to Charles Seafood twice..and wasn't impressed either time. Loved Seither's the first time we went..not so great the second. 1. Charlies - poboys (shrimp, oyster and roast beef), onion rings, and definitely seafood gumbo. The specials are also very good.
2.Village Inn - Boiled crabs and crawfish, shrimp poboy, onion rings
3. Bobby's - poboys (shrimp and oyster) boiled crabs, live crawfish
4. Seither's - poboys, boiled crabs (though my last order were very, very under par).
5. Seymour's - cool down plate, burger, poboys (as I said, not impressed with their poboys and to me if you can't make a good fried poboy then why would I expect you to make a good fried seafood platter?) I could be wrong, but with all the above choices so close it's hard for me to go back just to find out.
And YES you should definitely give Charlie's and Village Inn a try. If Charlie's has a shrimp ettoufee special then be all means get it. It's of a quality hard to find in a poboy shop (made with real shrimp stock and beautiful shrimp).
We also enjoy Mimi's but it is a much higher scale dining that any listed above.

I went to Charlie's for lunch with my family today and will have to change my ratings. It was not good at all, don't know what all the hipe is about. Charles Seafood has dropped down to #4 and Seymour's is now #1 in my book. I thought Charles Seafood was suppose to be so good. Also not crowded at all, got a table right away at noon time, place was almost empty.

I agree. We have been a couple of times and neither time was impressive. There are too many good places...it will be a while before we go back to this one.Hobbes wrote:I went to Charlie's for lunch with my family today and will have to change my ratings.
