Block Party Wedding

Post by DivaKitty »

I am FINALLY getting married in October. We're going to do it block party style. I sent in a request via the NOPD/City of NO site, but have gotten no response. Anybody know the correct channels to go through to block of a street for a party?
I'm also probably going to cater most of it myself, but would love to hear alternative suggestions from all of you! Money IS a factor.

My daughter did exactly what you are talking about just a couple of months back. They did it in their Bywater neighborhood where they closed off one block. I'm sure she'd be glad to pass along the info if you want to leave your contact info., send me a pm.

I know they had to get the signatures of every resident on that block, agree to hire a few off duty NOPD folks at $30 an hour (I think. I seem to remember that their plans stalled until they agreed to hire the off duty officers.)

But I'm sure she'd be glad to talk with you. Her party was a big success. That was the third friggin' time they had gotten married, btw. Yes, they actually had another ceremony that day -- no preacher, but some vows that they had apparently overlooked in their previous two attempts were exchanged -- so if that marriage doesn't take, then it won't be due to lack of planning or effort.

I've heard the taco trucks are good for block parties. Tacqueria Sanchez may still have some of their trucks for off-premises catering.
Congrats!
After Mon & Tues, even the calendar says W-T-F!

Ratcheese, I heard $30 an hour for a minimum of three hours for a public party. Now that I think about it, I know when my friends in the quarter moved they had to hire a cop to block off the street but I don't remember them having to pay for three hours...
I like kids. They taste like chicken.

Yeah, that sounds about right but I really don't recall the exact details. All went smoothly though, after they learned the rules.

First of all, congratulations! I have used Pigeon Catering and have been pleased. You can either get them to do EVERYTHING or order some of their items and pick them up and serve them yourself. Have had success both ways.

A little less espensive venue and one that I use to fill in with mini mufullettas, chicken drummettes, spicy meat pies and party sandwiches, is Check In Check Out Deli in Slidell, but there is one on Vets. Their egg salad sandwiches are the best.

There is a number listed under Orleans Parish Govt. Numbers for Block Party Permits 504-658-8040.

It sounds fun and October should be cooled off. I threw my wedding together in 3 weeks and just had a friend marry us at Southport Hall when it first opened. With just family and a few friends, we had about 75 people and it was so much fun. My family still talks about how much fun they had. The less you have to do, the better. I highly suggest using a caterer. You don't want to have to worry about putting food out during your celebration. Or you could have a pot-luck block party. The food bill was nothing compared to the booze bill (but then I come from Irish roots and married a Cajun Dago). :toast:

Congrats!
I like your style, EC... Great idea! I really appreciate everyone's input... I'm hoping to nail down a definitive plan this weekend. Pretty much all of my friends have been urging me to use a caterer for less stress, plus they can provide staff, linens/glasses, etc. and clean-up!
Keep those ideas coming!
