Tom Yum Soup

Post by Jesse »

I don't know where this soup has been all my life, but I must say it is now far and away my favorite soup. The one at Thai Spice is phenomenal. Spicy and aromatic, very herby. Wow. I've wanted to eat this every day since the fist time I had it.

Anybody ever cook it?

I googled recipes. I've never had it, but all the raves on the recipe sites make me want to. I'll have to try the ones you are recommending.

Now this is more like it.

Equator has a good everything...I love the place.

If Tom Yum is the same as Tom Kha, the coconut, chicken, lime juice soup, yes I have made it a few times and just love it. Have a recipe at home if you'd like.

They're similar, but Tom Yum doesn't have the coconut milk. It's good too though!

Turbo, how have your experiences been with Menu Express? I've been wanting to try them by was a bit apprehensive.

I want to cook this soup, but I'm having trouble finding kafir lime leaves and galangal. I haven't check Hong Kong Market yet though.

I have a kaffir lime in my backyard--you can get a KL tree from double M garden, though it's a little late to plant citrus. It will do fine in a large pot, too.

Hong Kong definitely has galangal, and Asian Gourmet market in Kenner often has it, too.

I have substituted key limes (or simply "regular" limes) and ginger for galangal and get excellent results. Would love to have a tree in my yard though!

When I moved into the house I live in now (last November) there was a 15ish foot navel orange tree in the back yard. When we moved in there were about a dozen oranges on it, and they were delicious. Now it has hundreds of little ones, hopefully they all stay on the tree and ripen. That's a little off topic, but the lime tree in the yard made me think of it.

Would it be too late to buy a lime tree and plant it?
