Fine Dining in San Francisco?
Fine Dining in San Francisco?
My little brother is graduating as valedictorian from law school in San Francisco this May. I'm looking for a good fine dining restaurant worthy or such an occasion and accomplishment in San Francisco. There will be 6 of us, all adventuresome diners and wine drinkers. Thank in advance for your help!

Gary Danko.
I've been 3 times and each visit would earn a spot on my top 10 meals of all time list.
It's pricey and tough to get in but I highly recommend it. Very special. Call NOW if you want in.

The Slanted Door is nice and fun and funky...good for a group.
I'll have to go find my travel folder to see where else we went, however, of all the visits GD is the only standout.
(and Pork Store Cafe in Haight Ashbury. Go there for breakfast. It was described to me as "Camellia Grill on LSD".
Neat experience.)
Too bad Michael Dominici isn't here anymore.

The Asparagus Soup at Gary Danko is to die for!

SF is dining heaven; gorgeous produce, fresh seafood, creativity all over the place.
If you want old-school croatian seafood (will remind you a bit of New Orleans), make time for Tadich. Paneled booths, a long bar, waiters in short white jackets, and wonderful, old fashioned seafood dishes. It's not swanky, but solid & traditional.
Quince is lovely, too: italian, soft pink & cream cozy dining room, chef who's a TU grad (Michael Tusk) who worked with Paul Bertolli at Chez Panisse. Very European in feel.

Restaurant prices in San Francisco make those in New Orleans seem mild in comparison. I haven't been to New York in several years, but currently San Francisco prices are the highest I know.

As John Wayne once said: "Life's tough. It's even tougher if you're stupid."

Gary Danko is a great choice, especially for such an occasion. I also like Michael Mina. He was the guy that opened Aqua years ago and now has moved on th open his namesake restaurant. But my choice would be Boulevard, just because I have had such great experiences there. You can relax and really enjoy yourself there. The previous two seem a little stiff, ....but you have a "formal" occasion.
