Breakfast Tour: Garden's Edge

Essentially this place is the cafeteria for the St. Vincent's Guesthouse on Magazine. I was afraid to go in there without some kind of massive disinfectant. But the sacrifices I make for you, the reader. Nonetheless, the menu is pretty standard but they have their own take on a couple of omelets. A Hula omelet featuring avocado and some other stuff and a Mexican omelet (which I was not getting due to the fact, I simply refuse to use the bathroom at St. Vincent's).

I picked my own omelet. Sausage, cheese, peppers and onions. The omelet itself is pretty substantial and the make them the way I like with the ingredients stuffed in the middle. Overall a definite B+. The grits are really good and you are given a huge amount. Wheat toast completed my meal.

Overall, I thought the food was good, but the place probably isn't worth the hassle of having to deal with the freaks of nature at St. Vincent's and the awkward parking situation. I can walk there but the parking on that end of Magazine really sucks. I recommend it but I can't see why anyone would voluntarily go there.

I'm curious, what is the issue with Catholic bathrooms?

Some childhood issue with priests and restrooms? Or perhaps nuns and restrooms? Or just general bathroom issues?

I find St. Vincent's to be repulsive. Mostly freaks of nature stay there. I cannot imagine the bathrooms to be remotely sanitary. I also didn't know it was run by the catholic church.

I stayed there several times ten years ago. It was clean and decent and perfectly situated for what I was doing. I suspect the addition of hostel accomodations is why there are "freaks of nature". As I recall there should be no problem parking as they had a fenced parking lot. Maybe they lock it now. The restaurant then was a tea room with fairly good food.

Most of the hostel websites have a lot of very negative comments about this place. Some acquaintances of mine were coming from Europe last year and planned to hostel through the US as if this were Europe with comparable hostel standards. I pointed out they could get deals on Bookit.com etc for not a whole lot more and they wouldn't have to contend with a moldy mattress. I can well understand Bam Bam's reaction. Maybe some of the old Abstract Book Store crowd hang out there now. This is one of those places like Lucky Dogs that I can say with confidence I am sure I will never patronize. Hats off to Bam Bam for taking one for the team.

I went this morning. Since I couldn't go to J'anita's, boohoo, and Blue Plate was closed (private party)...I wound up there.

I'm having one hell of a sneeze morning so I did get to check out the bathroom so I didn't have to blow my nose while others were trying to enjoy their breakfast. I'm a giver, what can I say. Anyway, the bathrooms weren't bad, but...I wanted to wash my hands before returning to the dining room...I pumped soap into my hand then attempted to turn on the water...it wouldn't come on and I was kinda about to freak out since I had soap in my hand..but then I got the hot to come out and had to wash quick because the hot water was HOT. That's all I have as far as bathrooms go.

The coffee was ok but I have wine glasses that hold more liquid than their little cups. I could have drank about 5 more cups if it had been readily available, but it wasn't and I drank the two I got.

I ordered the 2 egg breakfast. The eggs were over medium as I ordered them. The hashbrowns sucked (frozen shredded potatoes cooked on the grill with zero seasoning). The toast had plenty of butter on them..the bacon was good (crispy) and the sausage was eh.

While the dining room was pretty much full there was an explosion in the kitchen which was cause of a little commotion but passed rather quickly. I think it was a lighter.

Anyway, I'll try it again and order something else next time. The lunches did look good though and I'll be willing to try something from that part of the menu. And the deliver to my home which is nice if I happen to be sick or hungover or something and still remember they deliver.
