Dining report part III: Jamila's and Commander's
Jamila's, like Brigtsen's gets short shrift b/c this was taking too long to write...
Wednesday Dinner (New Year’s Eve): Jamila’s: This is a wonderful place to meet the woman who will become your wife on New Year’s Eve. It is even more wonderful to come back (when you can) every New Year’s Eve thereafter. I gotta say that some of the mussels were not top notch. Everything else was great. I have never experienced any hospitality more generous and congenial at a restaurant than that provided by Moncef and Jamila.
New Year’s Day Brunch: Commander’s Palace: Typically exquisite atmosphere and service that you would expect here. We had only a quibble with one plate. I started with an excellent gin fizz. Appetizers were the gumbo for our friend, the special blackeyed pea soup for my wife and the Shrimp Hennican for me. My wife and our friend liked their soups. The Shrimp Hennican was wonderful. The aroma rising from the plate almost made the plate alone. I could have eaten an entire plate of the accompanying pickled okra. For entrée’s, I had the griddle seared gulf fish, an excellent and enormous piece of redfish accompanied by very good sides. My wife had a their version of couchon which would’ve been great except that the poached eggs came out over cooked. Very unfortunate. Our friend had the shrimp and grits and reported that they were very good. For dessert, I had the strawberry shortcake, my wife had the bread pudding soufflé, and our friend had the chocolate dish, consisting of an array of chocolates. These were all good, but if I had the chance to order again, I would go for the soufflé. All in all, it was a very nice ending to our trip.

Enjoyed all your report. Did not get to New Orleans in 2008. God I hope things get better so I can get back this year.

As John Wayne once said: "Life's tough. It's even tougher if you're stupid."

Thanks to all who read and replied!
JRO, not to be too defensive but, well, in my defense I only ate three meals in a day once on the trip... and, let's face it, given limited opportunities to get back into town, I feel like I've gotta make the most of every one!

I've enjoyed reading these, thanks so much for your reports! I'm always amazed to find out about restaurants that have been around for many years.... and I've never heard of them! (Jamilla's). I think I live under a rock. heehee.... thanks for the tip, wishIdneverleft, I want to check it out.

Jamila's Cafe on Maple was written up in Food and Wine years ago for having some of the best Tunisian in the country. They serve their crawfish, zucchini, spinach bisque at Jazz Fest along with their merguez po boy.JudiB wrote:Amen to that, chere! That's what we foodies do, JRO.![]()

The food is fantastic, but be warned (or not) that they have belly dancers on Saturday evenings. They also have some sidewalk tables, weather permitting.
After Mon & Tues, even the calendar says W-T-F!
