Live Music - Piano

Post by Isabella Maja »

Hey Gang,

I'm in the mood to hear some live piano . . . really looking for someone who composes their own music rather than cover songs.

What are your recommendations?

A friend suggested Tom McDermott at Snug tomorrow night.
There's a clarinet player also - she didn't know his name.

It's been ages since I've been to Snug, used to be a regular hangout.

How is Snug these days & have any of you heard Tom McDermott & his nameless clarinet player? Wondering what style of music they play.

I used to love to go there for Astral Project, James Rivers Movement, Ellis Marsalis & Charmaine Neville.

Does anyone know how old Charmaine is?

If you get a chance to see Joe Krown, by all means, do so. He plays piano and Hammond B3 organ, and was the keyboard player for Gatemouth Brown for a number of years. I believe he's doing a gig at the Maple Leaf, but have no idea when.

Hey gang, this is an update since I last posted here.

So . . . . I've been to hear Tom McDermott play quite a number of times now since first discovering him. How come I've never heard of this guy?
Wow, he's quite the piano player!

And the guy he played with who was nameless is Evan Christopher. Clarinet player. I wish I were 1/1000th as good as he is on clarinet!

It has been so nice getting back into the jazz club scene, I just love live, local music.

Anyway, wanted to share with all of you that Tom McDermott & Evan Christopher are at Snug Harbor on Sunday from 3 - 6pm and it's FREE!
IIRC, they are playing the next 2 or 3 Sundays or so - same time, same deal.

I went to his CD release party for his new CD Duets - a couple of weeks ago which was quite a fun variety show.
Liked it so much my friend & I stayed for the 2nd set!

Now, if I could only catch James Rivers sometime.
Anybody know of any gigs he's playing?
Always seems like it's a private gig.
