Need your insights

Post by Kass »

Hello all,
Although I don't know you personally, I feel that I do. I love this forum! My husband and I will arrive in NO on July 7th, our 38th anniversary. My favorite meal is a steak, medium rare, and I hope that you will give me recommendations for dining. I look forward to hearing from you as to where we can have a wonderful anniversary dinner with steak as the star!
Thank you for any suggestions.

The best steak in city might be the prime dry aged NY strip at Delmonico. The place is pretty romantic and and a drink in the bar would set things off very well.
For a pure steak place, look up Mr. Johns.

A lot of us here like La Boca for steaks. It can be pretty noisy, though, which I find is a bit irritating for a special occasion. Emeril's Delmonico also does really nice steaks and has a broader menu. Lots of good places for steak here.

I recently had an excellent meal at Mr. John's Steakhouse on St. Charles Ave. It was good in every way. The steak was perfectly cooked, the service was spot on and the atmosphere was relaxing. It's not cheap but I enjoyed it more than my recent meals at Ruth's Chris.

It's on the street car line so if you're staying in the French Quarter, Garden District or Uptown it's an easy ride.

A little added information: we will be flying into NO, and taking a taxi to our hotel, the Hilton Riverside. We will either walk, take a taxi, or streetcar to any destination.

I had a very good steak dinner at Besh Steakhouse recently. It is inside the casino, but we asked to be seated in the back of the dining room so noise was not a factor. I had a less than enjoyable dining experience at the Ruth's Chris which is also affiliated with the casino. I love La Boca's steaks, but I don't really like their dining room, especially for a special occasion. There is a Morton's Steakhouse very nearby as well. I haven't been there in years.

It's no secret my go to steak place is La Boca and tonight proved no different. Medium Rare is exactly the way to go :) The steak is the star at La Boca but the sides don't shy away.

A great meal at La Boca is:
Share a salad (tonight it was a thick cut creole tomato salad with shaved red onion, Spanish blue cheese and reduced balsamic). If you are hungry, share the gnocchi (it's amazing). for entrees get one skirt steak, the other whatever (Kansas strip, Hangar, flap, skin on skirt, ect) and the fries and asparagus. Share.

In the quarter I love the atmosphere at Dickie Brennan's. And the food is great too.

And who exactly did you share that creole tomato salad with tonight??

Kass,

Just go to La Boca. Best steaks ever. Not even close. I hope 38 years from now JAG and I will still be enjoying meals there. We most likely won't be dining together and my grandson will probably have to cut my steak in small pieces so I can chew but as long as I have my two bottles of tri Tono malbec, I'll be happy.

La Boca's steaks are wonderful, but the noise level isn't right for your occasion.

Ruth's and Morton's are chains you can probably find in your local high end mall

Mr. John's and Delmonico are terrific choices - I would add Dickie Brennan's to that list. The steaks may not be quite as good (still, they are very tasty), but the atmosphere is most clearly that of a steakhouse, not a restaurant that also happens to have steak on the menu.

Crescent City and Charlie's also deserve mention. Neither serve great steaks, but both are fun local experiences.
