Re: new metairie restaurant

It's a new building on the site of the old Fun Arcade. Supposed to be Persian/Iranian.

Re: Restaurant Depot

I understand their memberships are not as simple to obtain as are those of Sam's and other warehouse clubs. They want a tax ID number and a business license that shows you are in the restaurant, catering or other food-related business. I have read where non-profits are also welcome, and that one may...

Re: time to ditch DSL?

I was also a BS DSL subscriber from day one, having had ISDN prior to that. I am much further from my central office than you, and typically got 1.2Mbps on an advertised 1.5Mbps connection. When BS offered me 3Mbps speed a few years ago for only $5 more, I took it, but was never able to get better t...

Re: Better Broccoli

If electric stovetop, would probably be best to have second burner already on low to move to. Although the SS pan I used has a bonded aluminum base, so it probably didn't cool down to low on my gas burner quite as fast as a lighter pan would have.

Better Broccoli

Mrs. Slow had a yen for some broccoli, and picked up some nice fresh on sale last week. While later surfing the cable guide, I happened to spot Alton Brown doing a show on broccoli-- already in progress-- and decided to see if I could get some inspiration. He was showing a rather simple technique, b...

Jeopardy!

Final Jeopardy category yesterday: Sports & The Media. Answer: On Feb. 8, 2010 the headline in a major newspaper in this city read, "Amen! After 43 Years, Our Prayers Are Answered" I thought, "How could anyone miss that?" The cop from WV said, "Miami?"; the returnin...

Re: Cafe Navarre

Having never realized they did breakfast-- last time I was there it was still Weaver's-- we tried it for a late Sunday morning breakfast. The OP's assessment fairly well sums it up-- good food at a good price. I had one of the Eggs Benedicts with hash browns, which were more in the style of plain ho...

Re: Dutch Oven Bread?

I have read about using fine sandpaper on the newer, grainier stuff. I also think just further seasoning will do the trick. The Wagner skillet I bought appears to have been factory machined or lathed to smooth the interior; it's evidently not a truly vintage piece. I'm also about 90% set up now to d...

Gascón Malbec Mendoza Argentina 2009

Yep, there's a glut of cheap Argentine Malbec since it's been declared the latest hip, red, southern hemisphere varietal. The Gascón has plenty of blue and black berry fruit, along with a subtle herbaceous quality, and some reasonably well-integrated, chocolate-y tannins for such a young red. $9 on ...
