I find this an interesting, and telling list, of our 20 most miserable cities.

4. Detroit, MI
5. Flint, MI
6. Miami, FL
7. St. Louis, MO
8. Buffalo, NY
9. Canton, OH
10. Chicago, IL
11. Modesto, CA
12. Akron, OH
13. Kansas City, MO
14. Rockford, IL
15. Toledo, OH
16. New York, NY
17. Sacramento, CA
18. Youngstown, OH

Wow.

I grew up in the Cleveland area- suburbs. Although I've lived here now longer than I had in Ohio, I still like the area.

I was an avid skier and snowmobiler, so the snow never fazed me. I had a great job.... a nice life.

Perhaps the inner-city might be "miserable", but Geauga County certainly isn't.

Other than Memphis, not one single Southern city made the list.

Nor did any place in New England. Interesting.

Why don't they just say everywhere in the Midwest?

Almost all of them are cold climates. I find it really odd that Miami was stuck in there so high

Here is Forbes "take" on the list. They included most things financial - taxes, foreclosures, business success (or not) - and crime.

Nanette, this was their comment for Cleveland:

The city of Cleveland has had a colorful history. The Cuyahoga River, which runs through the city, famously caught fire in 1969 thanks to rampant pollution, and it wasn't the first time. In 1978 it became the first U.S. city to default on its debts since the Great Depression. Cleveland sports fans have had to endure more anguish than those in any other city. The city has been dubbed with a less than endearing nickname: the Mistake by the Lake. This year Cleveland takes the top spot in our third annual ranking of America's Most Miserable Cities. Cleveland secured the position thanks to its high unemployment, high taxes, lousy weather, corruption by public officials and crummy sports teams (Cavaliers of the NBA excepted).

I can't imagine Kansas City or Memphis as being miserable...they're both in my top 10 cities of the US! I hated winters in Kansas City...but, loved living there the rest of the year..LOL

I've spent some time working in Memphis. The only thing I found miserable was the pay. It's nearly half what I make here. But for some reason, as a contractor, they are paying me double their full time people. I'll never understand the corporate world.
