Vega Tapas Cafe
Vega Tapas Cafe
We had a small dinner last night at Vega. This was my third trip there in the past two years and as bad as I want to, I can't make myself really like the place.
I like what they are trying to do with the vibe, small plates, and original food items. It just seems that once you get past the great descriptions on the menu, the food really does not wow me like I want it to. The waiter was very much average and I don't feel I am getting my monies worth. For $10 to $14 per appetizer I want to have more than a little min appetizer that allows me and the wife a small bite or two each.
For the cold dish we had-
*Eggplant Napoleon
Eggplant layered with Fresh Mozzarella, Arugula & Oven – Dried Tomatoes. Drizzled with Sun-Dried Tomato & Basil Pestoes
Sounded alot better than it looked.
For the three hot dishes we had-
*Crustacèos Bravas
Spicy ‘Brave’ Crawfish & Potatoes with Garlic Alioli
This was basically a few fried crawfish tails with some cubed potatoes.
*Char-grilled Green Mussels
with Lemon, Garlic, Olive Oil and Idiazabal Cheese
*Empanadilla de Cochinillo
Pulled ‘Cochon du Lait’ topped on Flaky Pastry, with Onions, Red Cabbage, and Pepper Jelly
I had no more than a table spoon(if that) of meat in this dish.
Again, I am not one who complains about small portions and such, but the flavor and execution of these dishes did not do all that much for me.
With a couple of drinks and the tip I walked out $80 poorer.
We were a little early for a Saturday night, but with all of my other visits, there were only a few other tables occupied.

Re: Vega Tapas Cafe
they are doing their Med menus now:
Tour of the Mediterranean
Our most popular event of the year begins July 14
Every week spotlights a NEW country
All Mediterranean Tasting Menus are $27 (5 courses)
optional pairing of regional wines, just $15
I can't seem to get out of there (or anywhere) for under $75pp, so this looked like a nice option.

I'm ignorant. What is a "brave" crawfish? Do they fight back?BTG wrote:"Crustacèos Bravas

Now this is more like it.

I like the place but I agree it can be underwhelming. I know you ordered 4 plates, but I bet you wanted a big breakfast this morning.

I wanted to go down the street to Mark Twains and get a pizza to bring home is what I really wanted to do.bam bam wrote:This doesn't sound all that good to tell you the truth.

BTG, speaking of down the street, have you been to Chateau du Lac yet?

I stopped in for a lunch one day and have been a few times for drinks. Pretty good experience.Pelican Six wrote:BTG, speaking of down the street, have you been to Chateau du Lac yet?

Re: Vega Tapas Cafe
Is Chateau du Lac one of those places I could stop by after work and have a glass of wine and an app/salad at the bar? What about yall Pelican Six...would that work at your place? It's my favourite way of dining out alone. It's usually fun talking to the bartender and whom ever else may be at the bar.

Re: Vega Tapas Cafe
Well, I haven't been to CdL since they moved, so I can't speak for them. I have been to Vega's bar for drinks and enjoyed it, but I don't know if they will serve food to you there.
And yes, I serve food at the bar when requested, also. Doesn't happen often, but when it does, it's usually singles or couples either early in the shift or very late. And I make a kick-ass Cosmo, or so I hear.

JAG, the bar is what I liked most about CDL. Both the bartenders that I have met were very friendly and they had no problem serving food there.
I have not been lately, but I had seen some signs they were putting our front advertising some really cheap happy hour deals.
