Well, there is certainly that aspect of it. Some of my better hook-ups were during Mardi Gras.:D
I thought Treme captured it well in this past week's episode.

I actively participate in Mardi Gras by riding and costuming as it is still one of my favorite holidays. I understand the semantics of the two phrases and I think Oyster's post was accurate (just can't believed he put himself in the same category of the dean!:eek:) But I just don't hear a whole lot of locals using the phrase "Carnival" as much as non-locals.
Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but some abuse the privilege.

I still say "carnival" is old school, as I said my parents and (late) grandparents always used that term. I agree one doesn't hear it as much now, with the current generation (myself excluded HA).
