Re: Hong Kong Market-seafood

My favorites from the HKM seafood case: yellowfin tuna for between $6 and $8 a pound, and whole red/vermillion/lane snapper in the 3-4 lb range (perfect size, to me).

Re: Fresh Mint?

I'd love to help, but the long, dry October wasn't kind to my mint patch (it lives beneath a huge oak, so it has quite a bit of competition for water). Try contacting the NO Botanical Garden; I strolled thru it last weekend and saw lots of mint in the edible garden area. Maybe they'll make a donatio...

Re: Got herbs?

Do you have to be a society member to participate in the sale? I'll be OOT that weekend but would love to make a purchase earlier in the week.

Re: Bridge City Gumbo Fest - Advice needed

I haven't been in a few years--was disappointed on my last visit so I quit going. Only 2 kinds of gumbo (neither was very good), not many very interesting other options, plus an admission charge. Granted, this isn't recent info, so maybe it's been revitalized?

Re: EAC: French Food Festival?

Can't speak for EAC, but my clan will be out in full force. Word is we'll have enough oysters for gumbo, but no fried oyster booth this year.

Re: I need suggestions

Think asian: rice paper wrappers are gluten free, so you could make some salad rolls & a peanut dipping sauce. Same goes for thai-style rice noodle dishes (who doesn't love a good pad thai?) Or, if you want to put a local flavor on the meet-n-greet, why not jambalaya? Rice is her (and thus your)...

Re: Mona's vs Lebanon Cafe

I went into the Carrollton Ave Mona's a few months ago (I was already parked at a meter on Oak & I didn't feel like moving my car). Eek--that place has zero atmosphere--it was like eating in a dingy, 1970s basement rec room. Woodgrain formica tables, no decor to speak of, sticky menu...just icky...

Re: Dutch Oven Bread?

The old Griswold stuff is so much smoother than the modern Lodge. I've heard of more than a few folks taking a grinder to the new Lodge stuff to polish up the rough interiors. Too much work for me: it's easier to fill in the texture with some grease & carbon through seasoning!
