Martina McBride has some serious pipes for being as tiny as she is.
I love me some Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn. My dad would answer Reba Macintyre.
Jennifer Nettles is a favourite these days, loving everything she does.
I'be been digging Gillian Welsh for a couple of years now. Since Jazz Fest I've been listening to Bettye Levette, damn she's good.
Why can't I think of her name....damn, that girl who's married to Garth Brooks, that girl can sing.

I'll get slammed for this, but in her prime Whitney Huston's voice is hard to match.
No one has mentioned Aretha Franklin yet. She still belts out effortlessly.

Joss Stone
For Pop music, I enjoy Babra Sreisand and Agnetha Faltskog's voices. I really enjoy Agnetha's "Jesus Christ Superstar" in Swedish.
Some of the singers that have been mentioned would be on my list of favorites.
A few more:
Tracy Nelson
Bonnie Raitt
Lucinda Williams
Madeline Peyroux
Schuarta

Ella Fitzgerald
Cami Thompson*
*You said "best", not most "well known"! Cami is the best jazz singer I have heard. Everything from SING SING SING to NIGHT AND DAY to DON'T RAIN ON MY PARADE to OVER THE RAINBOW. A powerful 4-5 octave voice.
