In my opinion, it's a toss-up between Cream and ZZ Top.

SRV and Double Trouble
The Jimi Hendrix Experience
Mountain
Rush
But, yeah, Cream for me. Every time I see ZZ lately, they look like they're just going through the motions, sloppily at that.

Not speaking of lately, but of career.
(And I regret leaving out Jimi Hendrix. Mea Culpa.)

That was just a personal aside. I have ZZ on vinyl that's older than bam bam, or at least from when he was in diapers.

The Police
Indicative of a law enforcement bias?

Wow, another good thread topic by Mac.
I have been out of town since last Thursday (just got back last night).
Some excellent choices here already.
Cream
ZZ Top
JH Expereince
These are three great choices.
The Police is another good choice, as is SRV and Double Trouble.
Personally, I don't care for Rush, although I know musically, they are all good players (I just never liked that band for some reason).
What about Grand Funk Railroad (aka Grand Funk)? They became a 4-piece with the addition of Craig Frost (keyboards) about the same time they dropped the Railroad from the moniker. They were a good 3-piece, Mark, Don and Mel. The Jam would be another good one. From 1968-1971, the James Gang was a 3-piece band that was pretty good.
I need to mention our very own Dash Rip Rock, one of the best bar bands of all time and a fabulous 3-piece.
Also, Material Issue, the Muffs (a 3-piece after one record as a 4-piece), Husker Du, the Minutemen and New Duncan Imperials were/are good 3-piece bands in the 80's and 90's.
I'm sure I missed some good ones.
All things considered, I say ZZ Top was the best (apologies to JHE and Cream).

Anyone else remember Triumph? :)
Can't argue with any of thre bands already listed, those are all favorites of mine.
I will provide my opinion for the best CURRENT 3-piece band: Rose Hill Drive. Three kids from Colorado that are just amazing players. They are also Pete Townsend's favorite new band, he took them out on tour with The Who last year.

I don't know how I didn't mention my good frineds, the Garza brothers of Los Lonely Boys. Fabulous 3 piece. Killer live act.

I didn't care for them all that much until I saw them live (as in live performance on TV). It was on a CMT Crossroads, with Ronnie Milsap. They played great, and were in total awe of Ronnie, who was their father's musical idol.

When I was a pre-teen, I simply ADORED Three Dog Night. Do they count? :p
Recently read that drummer (?) "Negron" was a heroin addict during their heydey..... guess he was a real mess. Thought that was interesting, as they did so many "wholesome" New Years Eve specials, etc.

Heroin must be a good preservative in some people. I saw him on a VH1 special years ago and he looked better than he did when he was young.
Jeremiah was a bullfrog! Was a good friend of mine!
I am a huge fan of Three Dog Night.

"Joy To The World" was written by Hoyt Axton, who also wrote, among other things, "Never Been to Spain" (Three Dog Night), "The Pusher" (Steppenwolf), and "The No-No Song" (Ringo Starr). The last two, plus a couple others, inspired by his own drug problems. His mother, Mae Boren Axton, co-wrote "Heartbreak Hotel".

Chuck Negron was one of the vocalist for Three Dog Night, a 7 member group (for most of its existence). The other vocalist were founder Danny Hutton and Corey Wells. The drummer was Floyd Sneed, with Jimmy Greenspan on keys, Mike Allsup on guitar and Joe Scheramie (who had previously played in a band with Cory Wells) on bass. There was some turnover in the band in latter years. A current version featuring Hutton, Wells, Allsup and Greenspan is touring.
Their biggest hit, Joy to the World, was written by Hoyt Axton.

For NoNoNanette, Mrs. Fury, and Turbodog (and of course everyone else that may be curious).
More than you ever wanted to know about Chuck Negron, pretty much the worst story ever:

Negron's book is fully engorged with tales....
Mama told him! :)

Jeffh. Uncle Tupelo was awesome. One of my faves. How did I forget them?
Peychaud, I agree the Jam were awesome. Paul Weller is still around and Bruce Foxton put out some good solo stuff after the band split up.
Low-n-slow, I think ELP was way overrated. I know musically, they were talented players, but I never "got" the band. Did nothing for me.

Heroin did not preserve them all. Dare I say we left out Nirvana?
