View Full Version : The food message board family grows....

Tom just announced in his newsletter that he is starting a new food message board. Here is the quote from him on why he left the old one
"My involvement ended when the board was taken over by cranks, and the management of the site saw nothing especially wrong with that."

I hate that we have to have so many different boards now. Too much dilution and not enough post. I visit three of them now and that is probably one too many.

Yes, I noticed that as well.

As of today, there were three posts.
All by TF.

I noticed the cajunator didn't sign his real name to his posts. He is a non-entity as far as Tom is concerned.

BTG,

Do you really think anyone other than the blue haired crowd is going to post on Tom's board? His terms of service are so restrictive that I cannot see how anyone could possibly post a critical review.

I won't be there, that is for sure.
You missed my post this weekend where I threw my allegience totally to your anti Tom crusade. I have now seen the light.

They deleted it, even though I had it over on the general discussion area.

Despite what feng shui says things were getting pretty boring over there...I couldn't even get back on the old Food and Wine board but they have fewer posters than over here. It just wouldn't take my password after they changed...besides (do not want to appear insensitive here) but who wants to discuss cornmeal mush?

Besides I relish the witty reparte you all will bring to the TF board...despite being censored by His Bigness.

This project is doomed to failure for one simple reason: you cannot hear Tomato's mellifluous voice on a messageboard. You can't hear him hum and scat while waiting for your messages to appear. You won't be able to hear the whine in his voice when you post something negative about the Brennan restaurants, and you certainly can't hear him freshly quip 'ya call that livin'???' What a shame...

I love how he still uses the cheeseball salutation even when he is being completely unhelpful.

Anyway, I was looking forward to participating in some heavily moderated food discussion. I guess that won't be happening.

Post it here. I'm sure we all would.

I am sure it really would not make for all that great of reading even if I could remember all of it. I had been drinking.
Tom just acted like a total possum anus when some guy called the show asking about what Tom likes to serve guest when he has them over to watch football. I am pretty sure the call was a prank, but Tom's dorky response just got under my skin. Then it got me thinking about how he ridicules old ladies when they call to give a bad restaurant report about a place he likes or when he constantly talks about Impastatos.

No big deal. I may have called him a few names and such in the post, which is probably why it was whacked.

Interesting that two of the major food media folks in this town, each have their own message board but that the majority of people who are willing to participate in such an endeavor are posting here on this board which is only slightly moderated by a non-foodie.

I very much would like to continue to bust Fitzmorris's chops over there. His posts already are starting to sound like a broken record. I'll be hanging out here for the foreseeable future.

Not that I looking to add more, but are their still others you think are useful to keep an eye on?

I knew a guy who was running a message board by himself for a while and was not making many friends while doing it. Anytime the rebels knew he was going to be out of pocket for a while they would destroy the board with spam and all kinds of crazy post.
If Tom is going to try to moderate that place by himself, he is going to be in trouble.

Just because one knows food does not mean they know the internet. Tom is a very good example of that. Tom would do much better to contract out his web work and concentrate on what he knows best.

And we just thought that tf was fat and stupid. Turns out he had the solution all along. One question though, why do the posters on that website have handles listed instead of their names listed with their posts? I was under the impression that international law prohibitied anonymity...........................

Christ, I am scrolling TF's godawful message board and it is clear he hasn't had an original thought in the year and a half he's been absent from the internet. It is as if he went to Ridgley's blog and cut and pasted his responses to previously discussed subjects. I know all we are discussing is food on his site but I really can't wait until he goes postal on us about the Presidential election.

Damn #7. I was just confirming my hunch with a quick google search and you beat me to the punch.

The overwhelming ass kissing in Jack's few replies smelled of NBB.

Assuming Tom reads this board, NBB will have to create a more inconspicuous profile to stay alive at nomenu.

He will also have to figure out a way to post from various IP addresses because I think TF has a way to check this (at least that is what he used to say when he was king of the old board before it was taken over by us cranks!).

Good luck NBB. I will be signing up just to see the show!

He was just pimping his site on the air a few minutes ago. He wanted to note some examples of some of the things being talked about currently, so he pulled the board up and rattled off a few things. One was a question about chliean sea bass. Another was a question about the best gin for martinis.

I noticed a lot of typos over there by the "Board editor". Perhaps the editor needs a proofreader to go behind him.

I also noticed some posts had been modified with "Tom sez". I guess "Tom sez" is the latest form of a tomment. Why he simply can not reply to a post baffles me.

What's funny is how he continues to promote himself.

"Back when I was an editor..."
"I published a 32 page newsletter..."
"Can you tell I was a math major..."
"Isn't this board fun?"

He really does fancy himself a teacher among students, occasionally reminding the students of his stature, and offering a motivational nuance when the atmosphere begins to wane.

I can just picture him staring at his screen, clicking the refresh button every 10 seconds, praying for a response.

Pathetic, in a sad sort of way, for one who is so busy.

The irony of the whole situation is this. These boards, whatever the subject matter, thrive on controversy. No one is a bigger lightening rod for controversy than TF. Yet, due to his numerous insecurities and neuroses the man cannot stand the heat of controversy. Thus, he tomments, edits, deletes and eventually bans until he is the lone voice in the woods not making a sound.
