If a military person, who's home of record is Louisiana buys a major purchase (such as a car) in another state that does not have sales tax is that person responsible for paying sales tax on the purchase when they move back to Louisiana?

If they are Louisiana residents they owe a use tax.

When I first moved here and registered my car, I had to pay the tax on it. Is that the samething, esentially?

From the DMV website:

MILITARY PERSONNEL

Military personnel are exempt from payment of use tax, providing they furnish proof sales tax was previously paid on their vehicle in one of the fifty states. Must submit a photocopy of their military ID card, military orders, or a statement from their commanding officer verifying they are active duty military.

Altered documents are not acceptable. Any corrections must be verified by a notarized affidavit of correction.

A complete chain of ownership must always be presented, either in the form notarized title assignments or notarized bills of sale.?

So, are they saying that since no sales tax was originally paid, that the military person would still be responsible for the full use tax?

JAG, do you know the tax rate they charged you?

I do not recall, it was many years ago. I couldn't prove I paid tax on the car (because I didn't) so I had to pay the rate here. Does that mean if I would have paid the 5% in Maine, I would have just paid the difference, I have no idea.
The car was bought in New Hampshire, so no tax was paid on it....til I moved here.

When I was on active duty, I bought a truck new in Colorado, had to pay use tax in Georgia (still on active duty)to get it registered, and when I moved to Louisiana (on terminal leave - still on active duty), they tried to hit me up for another use tax. Fully tired of that ****, I drove on expired Georgia tags for the next two years until I sold it to a friend who wanted it for a farm truck and let him deal with the tax headaches.

From the DMV website: "Active duty military personnel entering Louisiana may register and title their vehicle without payment of sales/use tax. Proof must be furnished that sales tax was paid in another state, along with a copy of their military identification."

Q. Who do I contact if I can not find the answer to my military question in FAQ?

A. You may call toll free 1-877-DMV-LINE (1-877-368-5463) and choose option 4 or you may contact us via the online form at http://www.dps.state.la.us/omv/email.html.

When I moved here in '87, I had to pay a use tax on my car to get a tag even though it was a few years old. I bought several cars back home over the years and if I recall correctly, I had to pay the difference between the MS & LA taxes. If it's a new car, just bring the bill of sale. It should have something on there saying the state doesn't tax the sale. Which state doesn't charge sales tax on cars?

Brought 3 cars from California to Nevada in March 2007, years 1981, 1986, and 2007 (3 months old). No use or sales taxes, much better license fee than CA.

And the Nevada DMV is to die for. I had to bring in each car one at a time, as a DMV person must read and record the VIN number. No waiting, VIN read, park car, take off old CA plates, go into building, get number, get called immediately, sit down with seated agent, do business, leave with NV plates, install plates, drive home.

I was not in the building more than 15 minutes with any of the cars. I spent more time removing the old plates and reinstalling the new plates in the parking lot.

California DMV is hell! You wait in line for hours. :headpop:

Nevada DMV is heaven!

I haven't done this in a long time as it was such a pain. I bought a car in MS and brought it to AL where I live. I had to pay the state and county sales tax at one place, the city sales tax at another and the title fee at still another. Took me hours. I swore I would never bring another car in from out of state.
