After watching the quake in California, although it was not major, it makes me thankful for hurricanes. Yeah, hurricanes suck, but at least we have WARNING, a couple of days or more of warning. We can get out, take our valuables, and go.

On the news this morning their still predicting the "Big One" in California sometime in the next 30 years. It's a certainty they said. Sure, 30 years is a long time, but it could be next month, next year, in the next 5 years, etc...no one knows. I'll take a hurricane anyday over that.

Same goes for tornados, which just pop up with no warning either. I know we occasionally get a tornado around here, but it is pretty rare(although they seem to be occuring more often around here lately...mighta been all those Fema trailers attracting them :) ).

The tropics are looking pretty good right now, but I could sure use a little 2 day hurrication soon. My next vacation isn't until October and work is becoming a pain in my a$$. I always liked hurricanes as a kid b/c I thought they were exciting. I got out of school for a few days...everyone was running around buying water, canned goods, batteries, etc. Dad was running around putting plywood on the windows. There was just something in the air. It wasn't until Katrina, that I saw what a hurricane could really do b/c up until then it had always been just little stuff, if anything at all.

I know people must think I'm crazy for wishing for a hurricane, but I just wish for the "old days" kind. A cane enters the gulf, it looks like it might be heading here, everyone starts getting ready, I get off of work, kids get out of school, people evacuate, I party with friends at a "safe" house and watch the news constantly while drinking and eating our hurricane supplies(chips, dip, BBQ), then the hurricane goes somewhere else and we all come home. A nice little vacation. I sure could use one.

My wife was on the phone all night with her friends and family that live there. They said this was mild, but each of her brothers have been through big ones. I would rather have the warning as well.

After several weeks of calm in Reno, at 3:35 am yesterday, we were (almost) thrown out of bed as a 3.3 magnitude hit (again).

We didn't get any press as the LA quake hit later that morning. I wonder if there was any "connection" as both occurred after periods of quiet.

To appreciate our circumstance, here is a plot of the Reno quakes, all of which occurred since Feb. 28th. Before Feb. 28th, none, zero, zip, nada. Our house is under the first "t" of Somersett.
