I had a doctor's appointment this morning. I took the opportunity to have a late lunch at Martin Wine Cellar. It was still crowded around 1:15 and I was pleased to see they had their specials. I ordered the healthy special, which was a grilled salmon with a sundried tomato crust and baby carrots, and zucchini. The salmon was a tad overcooked. But overall, it was real real good. The specials lacked the flair they had during the deli's heyday on Barrone St. but overall it was a good experience and I cannot wait until 2009 when the uptown location reopens.

I should add that I had the healthy special because it sounded like the best thing on the menu.

it's the same chef dave that was at baronne.
his cooking is similar to gerard maras> very light-handed, ingredient-driven..
really letting the ingredients do the talking. very little salt.

without a doubt, these specials are the best bargains out there at usually $12-$13
for things that would be double that in a 'real restaurant'.

i love his cooking.

ps> aren't the 'healthy' options, by definition, less flair?

This is the first I'm hearing about a return to Baronne St. in a while. There was a lot of speculation after the storm and mixed signals. The last I heard - and this is long ago now - was that the Baronne location had been permanently written off by Cedric as a retail venue. So, the "letter" on the MWC site about a 2010 return notwithstanding, how valid is this information? If it's reliable, then I am glad to hear it, since I live within walking distance. I used to eat or get take-out a lot there. I rarely go to the Magazine location. I do go to the Metairie store occasionally on the days I am working at my Metairie office. I was in on Monday and wanted a Reuben because Stein's was closed. Big gloppy mess and the meat quality didn't compare to Stein's. Shoulda had the special instead. Well at least I got my Schneider Weisse and some decent German Rieslings on sale, so the visit wasn't a total loss.

I NEVER liked their food, and couldn't get into it. IT WAS not bad, just blah. But I have not been since the hurricane, maybe I should give them another try.

I am in the Metairie store at least once a week picking up either food or drinks.
The pre-packaged to go food is what I usually end up getting. I like the quality and alot of those dishes will feed the wife and I if we are having a side dish to go with it.

My favorite thing food wise from there is to do the brunch.
