WASHINGTON - Tony Snow, a conservative writer and commentator who cheerfully sparred with reporters in the White House briefing room during a stint as President Bush's press secretary, died Saturday of colon cancer. He was 53.

"America has lost a devoted public servant and a man of character," President Bush said in a statement from Camp David, where he was spending the weekend. "It was a joy to watch Tony at the podium each day. He brought wit, grace, and a great love of country to his work."

Snow died at 2 a.m. at Georgetown University Hospital, according to former employer Fox News.

Michael DeBakey, Tulane's most prominent alum, and heart surgeon pioneer died last night as well. We lost two good ones on July 12.

He was also a great musician. Played alot with Jeff Skunk Baxter of Steely Dan. He had a little group, Beats Working. Also, was good friends with Ian Andersen of Jethro Tull fame, as they both were great on the flute.

Great guy.

..no matter what PS said on the other board.

He was also a great musician.
Meaning Snow, of course. Although, it does make one chuckle for a moment to visualize Dr. DeBakey jamming with Skunk, or with one leg hoisted in the air. The band name would even work: Heart Beats; Working.

I was sorry to see Tony Snow pas away. I always liked him even when he was WH press secretary.

I was also sad to see we lost Blackie Campo last week as well, but at least he got to rebuild his marina before leaving us.
