They're frozen, dark brown and lousy. I got the Butterfly shrimp and onion rings the other day and I got seven shriveled, overcooked shrimp and brown frozen onion rings for seven dollars. It was awful.
The Popeyes wonderful homemade onion rings memorial service will happen soon. Check this space. :D

I had some 3 weeks ago and they were the same as the TRADITIONAL ones
I am stunned! I love the original ones!!

I STILL mourn the demise of the original, stick-to-the-roof-of-your-mouth, lightly buttered AND salted, lighter-than-air biscuits. I really don't remember the onion rings...

the thought of ordering shrimp at Popeyes has never even
crossed my mind.
if overcooking was as bad as it got, consider yourself lucky.

Where's Al when you need him most?
On second thought...don't answer that.

It's been quite some time since I had Popeye's, but for some reason last week, I had the feel for just a taste.
All I wanted for dinner was a thigh. Nothing else. All they had was mild.
It unexpectedly came with a biscuit.
The chicken was so bland, I never want to eat mild again.
But the biscuit! When did they change this? OMG!!
It not only looked plastic, it tasted plastic. I ended up throwing both away.
It was just gross.
My condolences on the onion rings. I used to like them too.

It was the Popeyes in Elmwood and I was surprised too. They didn't even warn me. Maybe some of the others still have the old ones? I'll have to call and find out.

Okay, I was with others and wasn't in the mood for chicken. But I'll never order them again. I've learned that lesson.
I think much of it with Popeye's has to do with the location. there is one near my work in Boutte & it is horrible, has been for years.
Although I haven't had Popeye's in years. I have Chubbies chicken near my house in Algieers, very good, & consistent.
We have noticed from New York to Houma that Popeyes has stopped cooking food periodically throughout the day to have relatively fresh product on the line at all times. It seems that the employees now cook off the full day's supply of chicken in the morning to make their day easier. The chicken sits there all day becoming more dry and more soggy as the day progresses. Preparing the biscuits correctly takes too much time it seems. Now the biscuits are almost always tiny little disks of disappointment.

I rarely stop at Popeye's, but every once in a while I'll have a craving and every time I'm disappointed. I don't know what happened to the good, old Popeye's of my youth(the 80's), but it aint the same!
The Super Popeyes on Vets, had the best chicken out of any of them I found and I think that was b/c Al still owned that location and Chris was managing, so quality was better, but I don't know what happened to that place. It was open AFTER the hurricane and doing a great business, but then it just closed up one day and never opened again.
I also found Popeye's expensive. I never think about it, till I hear the total from the cashier and then I think $15 for 2 people for FAST FOOD? I know $15 isn't alot, but I remember when 2 meals would cost about $6 or $7. Fast food is supposed to be cheap IMO, especially considering it's crap and the portions keep getting smaller and smaller. Has anyone seen a Big Mac lately? It looks just slightly bigger than the burger one gets with a Happy Meal.
I agree. I used to get a Wendy's chicken sandwich every now and then when they used a real, full sized chicken breast. Now they use a little chicken breast wannabe. I used to get a Burger King fish sandwich every now and then until they started using a microscopic, greasy piece of fish mess.

We had Popeye's about a month ago and everything was fine. The chicken was crispy, biscuits light and fluffy (alibeit dripping with butter - or some butter flavored oil product), and even the fries were crispy. Now, we usually order a 20 piece box, or one of the specials, since we seldom havefried chicken unless we have company of some type, and this case involved a sleepover of 15 yo's. I do agree that product differs from location to location, and we usually use either the one on Veterans west of Clearview, or the one close to Martins Wine.
If we get the craving just for family, we will normally go to Canes or Brothers.
There is a Discount Zone on Broad, not too far from Canal that serves Broasted Chicken (pressure fried). It's delicious and better for you.

I was never a fan of Popeye's... I always thought it was heavy and greasy.
Has anyone ever had something called "Krispy Chicken"? It's a patent, and I've seen it advertised in a bunch of places... the one closest to me is Guillory's grocery on Derbiny in Metry. Man that stuff is KILLER good.
There is still a Sunrise Fried Chicken near us that keeps it's quality up fairly well. We get chicken there once in a while. They had my favorite fast food onion rings in the old days. I have not tried them lately. They are usually better than the Popeyes that is nearest to us in Houma.

maybe that batch was bad? Sounds really weird. Why would the onions be brown?

Are there still Danny's Fried Chicken stores around Houma? There was one in Bourg that was my favorite as a kid for onion rings.
#7 throw away to do list.

I'll third Guillory's fried chicken. I recently placed an order for 50 pieces and they cooked it to order. It was delicious! I love that little place! :)

I've noticed recently that Popeyes outside New Orleans usually don't even have onion rings anymore. I hoped they have not changed them in town.

Yes. They just opened a new location a few blocks from home. They are in Chauvin and Morgan City too.

Cut an onion from pole to pole in strips. The layers form sticks

how do the layers not fall apart when frying? or do you fry them or bake them?

They do not fry the wedge but take it apart layer by layer. Each layer from that wedge is the stick. They fry it off course.

So it's a deconstructed onion mum?

Seems disappointing onion rings are a recurring subject lately. Maybe someone want to start a new thread revisiting that topic of where to find the best?
