Took my sister to lunch at St. James today - her first time. She had the Brie de Meaux - Ham and melted brie on french bread. I had a 7-course cheese board.

I've got to tell you, for $22, I don't think you can find it's equal anywhere in the city. I always ask them to surprise me, and I haven't been dissapointed yet. Selections covered mild to full-bodied, cow, sheep and goat milk cheeses, soft and runny to hard, fresh to aged. I found the fresh chevre with a rosemary-thyme herb rind to be the standout of the lot. Accompaniements were slices of perfectly ripe pear, candied walnuts, apricot chutney, and my favorite, slices of fresh fig. St. James is a class act and easy on the pocketbook.

And before the usual snobs chime in with "you simply cannot get good cheese in this country because you cannot import raw milk cheeses, which is the ONLY blah, blah, blah..." let me remind you: You CAN still get a first-class *sskicking in the good ol' U.S. of A. Go huddle with your brie-sniffing surrender-monkey friends in France and send me a postcard.

Danielle told me that they are still working on expanding into the space next door, with a hint of irritation in her voice. Seems like they've been working on it for a while. Ah, buildouts... I empathize.

According to the slate outside, there is still availability for Chef Greg Sonnier's dinners on July 31 and (I forgot the other date).

We took the long way home - St. Charles to Carrollton, which took us by Plum St. Snowballs. Mmmmm.... Nectar with condensed milk while rolling down Carrollton listening to "Photograph" by Nickleback with my favorite kid sister - hope your Monday was half as good as mine.

Raw milk cheeses are readily available in the USA. There is a limit on how ripe they may be though. I belive that it is still 120 days. Depending upon which of the seven levels of ripeness you prefer on a particular cheese, this may or may not be a problem.

I know that - it was directed at Prohibitionist, since I'm positive he still lurks on these boards.

I turn my nose away at this thread.

For anyone to say that there is \"fine\" cheese in America shows the ignorance of the board. Fine cheese does not exist in America. True cheese connoisseurs know that the only good cheese is the cheese that is made with unpasteurized milk. Sadly, the USDA does not allow fine cheese to be made or shipped into America.

I refuse to eat cheese in the USA. It is an abomination to cheese. I only eat cheese when I am in Europe. When I do, my two favorites are Gorwydd Caerphilly and Tunworth.
