We had a small dinner last night at Vega. This was my third trip there in the past two years and as bad as I want to, I can't make myself really like the place.
I like what they are trying to do with the vibe, small plates, and original food items. It just seems that once you get past the great descriptions on the menu, the food really does not wow me like I want it to. The waiter was very much average and I don't feel I am getting my monies worth. For $10 to $14 per appetizer I want to have more than a little min appetizer that allows me and the wife a small bite or two each.
For the cold dish we had-
*Eggplant Napoleon
Eggplant layered with Fresh Mozzarella, Arugula & Oven – Dried Tomatoes. Drizzled with Sun-Dried Tomato & Basil Pestoes
Sounded alot better than it looked.
For the three hot dishes we had-
*Crustacèos Bravas
Spicy ‘Brave’ Crawfish & Potatoes with Garlic Alioli
This was basically a few fried crawfish tails with some cubed potatoes.
*Char-grilled Green Mussels
with Lemon, Garlic, Olive Oil and Idiazabal Cheese
*Empanadilla de Cochinillo
Pulled ‘Cochon du Lait’ topped on Flaky Pastry, with Onions, Red Cabbage, and Pepper Jelly
I had no more than a table spoon(if that) of meat in this dish.
Again, I am not one who complains about small portions and such, but the flavor and execution of these dishes did not do all that much for me.
With a couple of drinks and the tip I walked out $80 poorer.
We were a little early for a Saturday night, but with all of my other visits, there were only a few other tables occupied.
