View Full Version : Lunch at Lüke - Oktoberfest arrives early

With my conference at a midday conclusion, I had another rare opportunity to dine in the CBD for lunch. Since Ms. Gourmondo recently had an excellent lunch at Lüke (to which I was inexplicably uninvited), I decided to check it out. My delay in a trial of this establishment is the result of my loathing of the inappropriate use of the umlaut along with my occasionally following a variant of the Fatz rule in which I do not visit a place until it has been open at least six years. I was perusing the menu when the word choucroûte jumped out at me immediately and I stopped reading further. I started with a Schneider Weisse draft, one of Bavaria's great weissbiers, served in a weizen glass. What followed was the best rendition of a pork shin I've had since the days of Willy Coln. Phenomenal, super tender, wonderfully seasoned, HUGE portion. My waiter laughed that it was a "medieval" portion; I felt like I was eating in one of those Capital One commercials. This was served on a bed of the afore-mentioned sauerkraut. If you've never had good sauerkraut, try this version - it was wonderful. If the meat wasn't enough, it comes with creamer potatoes, but I got a side of spätzle instead, which were superb. The entire meal was worthy of any Bierkeller in Munich. Highly recommended. Now if we could just get Besh to do the food at the Deutsches Haus, all would be right with the world.

Oops, I was so fixated on the giant pork bone that I forgot to mention that the entree also comes with a couple of homemade bockwurst, with a side of sweet brown mustard. The wurst is pretty good. I have had better, but around here, any time I can get homemade wurst, it's a good thing. The mustard was perfect. It goes without saying that you should have a hearty appetite if you order this.

Thanks for the Luke report, Gourmondo.

I have often stated that Luke is two restaurants. A spectacular lunch spot and a mediocre dinner place. Sounds like you went to the good restaurant.
