Will we be able to use avatars on this board? I do know that a lot of posters tend to identify others by their avatars, and it helps when users have changed their userid.
Thanks.

In addition to Avatars, users also have the ability to upload a Personal Picture to their profile. So you may have done the latter, and overlooked the former.
Let us know if further assistance is needed.

The problem that I have is that under options in the profile, use avatars is enabled but when I go to edit avatar, the "Don't use avatar" option is checked and I can't seem to figure how to enable this option.
I had checked this at first and then uploaded my jpg as a picture, but have since removed the jpg.
Thanks

Click "Use Custom Avatar" in the lower box, and "Do not use avatar" in the upper box will automatically uncheck. Fill in the URL if your avatar is hosted on an internet server*, or upload an image from your own computer. Later, if you check the "Do not use an avatar" button, and press Save, it will have the effect of deleting your current avatar.
*This practice is strongly discouraged, unless you are the owner of the server upon which the image is stored. Using images from other locations is considered "bandwidth theft".

That's the problem, I don't see a lower box. All I see is the one with the "Do not use avatar" checked.
Sorry to be so much of a pain!:(

No trouble at all. In fact, in correcting our oversight, we actually found another setting we had wanted to correct. So, Thanks!
Try it now.

I'm not doing so well....
I usually use ImageShack to reduce my pics to post on forums, and there's an "avatar" option.
That's not working here.. it's still too big.
So I put it into paint and "stretch/skewed"ed it till it's illegible... and still the upload is failing.
Hmmm... I was going to "attach" it here... but there's no "attach" feature. I tried the postcard thingee up there... but the only option is to enter a url... which gets into bandwidth issues....(no "browse" to get it off my hard drive)
Is this that proverbial rock/hard place thingee my mama warned me about? ;)

It did the same when I uploaded my "Radosta's Cow" avatar, Judi, but you can see she's there in the upper left corner. Maybe some minor glitch.

LOL... I'm just ... well.. challenged sometimes. ;)
Jeeves, it wasn't even a minor glitch, I hate ta' tell ya' this but it was USER ERROR. lol
What happened is, (I realized on like the fourth try.... sheesh...) it 'takes' the first time... but you don't especially get any notice... it doesn't say... GOOD JOB JUDIB YOU DID IT... or anything... it sends you back to what looks like a blank screen, with a tiny avatar showing, so you think you have to click on "submit" again...
Only when you click on "submit" again... (taking a breath)... actually the new url spot or browse spot is EMPTY... so it's reading it as a failure.
And I'm wide awake now, and that is still the best I can 'splain it. lol

I can't seem to load an avatar. The size fits but I get a message about it not being a good file or something like that. It's bmp, not that I understand that, but is there a restriction on this type?

No restriction we are aware of. jpg or gif would be preferable. bmps are an uncompressed format, and tend to have very large filesizes for given dimensions, relative to jpg or gif. If you want try to to attach your bmp to a post, we will be happy to convert it for you.
On edit: We looked at your old avatar on TOB. It's an animated gif. Not permitted here. :o If that is what you're trying to use, that might be the problem.

Thanks. That was awfully nice of you. I actually wanted my gumbo avatar before the last incarnation of TOB. I don't have it any longer. I think I lost it in the great computer crash of '07. Should have gotten it back before the board when haywire.
I found one for now, but if you come across a nice bowl of dark roux gumbo with no okry or tomatoes, I would be ever so grateful! (If that's not asking to much, of course.)

If it can be had, we're going to make it a priority to get it back for you. We have some methods.

We remember your old avatar. Net archives were unfruitful. This is close:

I'll take it and thanks! How did you do that? Who were y'all on TOB?
