Bring your bank roll with you if you do. I just picked up some from the Galley at $19 for six crabs. They are big, but that seems kind of high.

Found a new place on the Jefferson Highway right next to the Presbyterian Church, a block from Central Avenue. I think the name is A & S Seafood. Just opened. Last week I got boiled crabs for right around $8, I think, for 1/2 doz and they were the large ones, full of fat, heavy and just full of crab meat. Best I have had in years

I think Jerry recently bought "empty" crabs from Rouses. I can't remember what he paid.

The restaurant we used to visit for crabs no longer carries them. The owner said the price he'd have to charge the customer per crab would have the whole town thinking he was trying to screw them. There's another place out here (The Crab Trap) but I have not eaten there. They have no A/C.

My friend paid $5 per crab at The Galley not too long ago so I think you did pretty good considering. Personally I'll pay anything for good boiled crabs but yeah it's getting ridiculous. Everything is.

I paid $38 for a dozen at "1721" in Houma. If my wife wasn't pregnant, I may have passed. But mommy wanted boiled crabs, so mommy got boiled crabs.

They were very large and very good.

Mommy was happy, so everyone was happy.

I have to report that the crabs were outstanding. Well worth the price.
The boiled shrimp were outstanding as well. Lots of spice.

I am in the same boat as Todd. The wife wanted crabs.

Wow Newman... you could have resold them on the black market and retired! lol

Thanks for the tip... I'll check it out tomorrow.

I haven't had crabs all season, for that reason... too much money.

Tuesday, on my way home from work, around 4pm, I stopped in at Village Inn to see if they had any crabs. As luck would have it Shaun was just pulling the first boil out of the pot. My wife was out of town so I only bought 5 fat females. They threw in an extra. The cost was $2 per crab, so for $10 bucks I had a great meal....though I wouldn't want to check my cholesterol this week.

When Village Inn has crabs the cost is usually $2 each for medium and $3 each for large, boiled.

1921! You must stop posting at 3:00 AM!

Take a piece of string, some chicken necks and a net and catch your own. I could never see myself paying so much for crabs. They are too readily available.

We went to lunch on Sunday with two other couples, and the talk came around to the crazy prices of boiled crabs.

One gentleman, who is older, said that he and his wife go to a Chinese buffet place, (I didn't catch the name)...that serves boiled crawfish and crabs. For one price, they eat their fill. I asked what they tasted like, and they claimed they were good......but I'm suspicious.

Has anyone given this a try, and if so, what was your experience? I like my berl to burn-my-lips-spicy. LOL

I have tried crawfish and crabs at chinese buffets out of curiosity. They were boiled in water with salt and a little cayenne at each place. Not really that good, but some have been passable.

I have not bought any lately, but I have had a few friends give me some. It seems everyone I know who usually fishes is running crab traps right now and doing well.

Crabs in LaPlace on the lake at the Crab Trap are $21-30 bucks a dozen depending on the size. They have light fluffy snowballs upstairs at Lakeview Snowballs. Just ask Jeeves. :) Across the road is the Frenier Landing Seafood Restaurant and Oyster Bar still under construction. I can't wait & hope it will be good.

The few times I have had them in recent years, I find they are not the same as they used to be.

Does anyone find "picking" crabs a royal pain in the ass?

Yes, they are a pain in the ass to pick, but the reward is oh so sweet!

Actually, it may be cheaper to buy it already picked. I picked a large crab a few weeks ago and weighed the resulting crabmeat, 3.375 oz.. A previous poster said he paid $38 a dozen, that means if you can find mixed crabmeat for $15 a pound, why bother picking it yourself?

You better watch it Suzy, ALEX said a friend gave him crabs recently! :D

My friends are doing well crabbing in the lake. They are smaller (don't they seem to be every year) but they have been mostly full.

Oh, and Frank, the reason why the crabs are sooo much in Baltimore is because all of the airfares from MSY have gone up!

BTW, my friends in the lake had an unusual haul today. Does anybody know how to cook manatee?? LOL!

I buy Lump from the Shrimp Lot all the time. Two weeks ago, it was $11/lb. You gotta pick alot of crabs to get one pound of crab meat.

Not Jumbo Lump, but Lump. Jumbo runs $20+.

I'll take two lbs. of Lump to one lb. of Jumbo lump...

"Mixed" should be alot cheaper than $15, if you can find it.

Here is a link to the Shrimp Lot. Best to call in advance for the crab if you are driving a long distance. They have plenty now, but make sure before driving.

Man, my Soft Shell Crab sandwich was sure good at lunch today...

Oh WOW... get out, flyinbayou!! In the LAKE? I thought they were salt water mammals...in fact, I went and did a google on them, and learned sumthin'. lol

But I'm curious.... isn't that very rare? And how the heck did it GET in the lake, that's what I want to know! lol

And who says forum blogging isn't educational? :)

You've not heard of crabbing in the Lake? I can remember pulling nets from the seawall at 5 years old. Lake crabs are the best!! and best (PawPaw used to say) the year after the Spillway was open. So next year should be great. And it's more a brackish water there.

When Mrs. Fury and I stopped in there over the weekend I axed owner Louie Lipps what his berled crab prices were and presently they're Large #1s are $29 a dozen; $15 a half dozen. Medium #2s $19 a dozen and $10 a half dozen; Small #3s $12 dozen and $6 a half dozen. Beer goes for $2 - $2.25 Corn, potatoes, sausage, garlic cloves are fiddy cent each. As Mrs. Fury warned, the place isn't air conditioned, but other than that it's a nice, West End Park kinda place to eat.

Judi they have "manatee area" signs posted by the boat launch where the Crab Trap is but I've never seen one out there. Last weekend there were kids jumping off the boat launch into the lake. Looked like they were having a great time.

Yeah, they were asking the boaters to be careful last weekend as there was a spotting of one or more on the northside of the lake. At least I think that is what they said. :)

I read this in the paper (TP) somewhere.

I think they are cute! Judi, I bet their mothers love them...AHHAHAA JJ

They are sweet and harmless. It's sad how they get hurt and killed by the boats.

Alex,
I was thinking of someone peeling them for me, and feeding me. AHHAHAAA

Judi, while there aren't exactly alot of them, there are manatees in the lake. We see them occasionally when fishing out at the mouth of Cane Bayou and Bayou LaCombe over on the Northshore. They were gone for years, but once the shell dredging in the lake stopped and the water cleared up a bit, they came right back in. They're kind of strange to watch-pretty much big black blobs with fins, but not afraid at all. They just kind of slowly bumble around.

boiled crabs at the Galley last night were $5.99 lb.; my two fat males were full of meat and cost $6.56.
boiled shrimp were $12.99 lb.; these were huge!
the crabmeat au gratin was full of jumbo lump and was priced as an entree for $16.99 (down from $20.99 earlier in the week); three of us shared it as an app with fresh, toasted french bread.

After reading all of the responses, I guess the prices weren't all that bad. It has just been a while since I purchased crabs.

Yesterday my brother-in-law and a friend went and set out traps in the lake near Seabrook and came up with 131 crabs. They boiled them right away and gave me a dozen. Free ones always taste so good. :)
