The Dead Pelican looks just like the Drudge Report.

It has many links to local Louisiana papers and other links that come in handy sometimes if you are interested in Louisiana news items.

DILFAN:
I've used the free AVG for years without any problems... BUT.... some of my buddies over at www.worldstart.com aren't pleased with the new version that you MUST download by the end of this month.
There are alot of fans of AVIRA FREE. I've downloaded it, but haven't installed it yet.
Just a heads-up for you. :)

free is free when it comes to virus software.
Clamwin is good for windows machines. it's light, works and is free. The pay version of AVG is still very good IMO.
Never heard of Avira, but then again, i'm happy with Clamwin.

I just uninstalled FreeAVG 8 off of my mothers computer, and I am installing AVIRA. I will let you know because my wife's AVG is popping up for the upgrade to 8, but I clicked the later button on that one... I hate dealing with this @$^%& when I am at home, but... family.
As far as the non free virus protection, I use CA Etrust 7 at work but I do not like it as much as version 6. It has not failed me yet though. Symantec is has gone mad with their pricing and licensing fees, and most of the stuff out there is resource intensive.

Any specific reasons? No problems with it here. At least when you tell AVG8 you want to do your scan at 3am, it doesn't revert to 8am every time you do an update like previous versions.

I installed it on an older machine and the machine ran much slower after I did. Since I have removed it and replaced it with AVIRA the machine is performing better. It could just be the machine and not AVG since I see no difference in the performance monitor, but it is running better for sure.

Perfect timing, baby.... ran free AVG for years. Just 10 minutes ago got rid of it and replaced it with Avira.
Any ideas on how to "tweak" this thing?
Basic questions are this:
When configuring:
INCOMING
OUTGOING
All Files, Smart Extensions, or Use File Extension List.
Honestly, Alex.... I can find my way around my 'puter pretty easily, but sometimes I feel like a real dope.
Thanks in advance. :)

I went with incoming and outgoing and used smart extensions. Hopefully it will not be to resource intensive. It seems to be doing OK.

Don't thank me yet. I just started using it yesterday. The verdict is still out on AVIRA.

I've installed Clamshell on my desktop and Avira on my laptop over the last couple of days, so I'm playing with both as well. I already have one small complaint regarding Clamshell. Every time you launch your email program, a Clamshell splash screen appears and pauses the load for about 6 or 7 seconds. I know it doesn't seem like much, but it sure seems to interfer with email more than most other AV products. In defense, I am using both at the default installation settings. I will try to tweak the settings in another couple of days after the system settles in.

Alex, what's your opinion of having two anti-virus's loaded? Better than one? Likely to conflict with one another? Slow the system operation down?
I'd appreciate any comments. I have been using Webroot Spy Sweeper with Sophos Anti Virus (included in Spy Sweeper). Any point adding Avira?

No, Sophos and Spysweeper should be enough. Not only would adding Avira eat up more resources, and sometimes the anti-virus programs will go to war with each other. I once installed CA6 without uninstalling Symantec first and it took 45 minutes to boot a workstation. I knew right away I had messed up so I did the rest of the office machines and went back to it - it was hosed - had to boot to safe mode to fix it - not pretty at all

I agree. It's okay to have multiples running if you're evaluating a new product, but there is a good possibility that each one will see the other as a virus, so you have to be prepared to disable one or the other during the eval period.
BTW, I inadvertently called one product Clamshell when it is really Clamwin. And as soon as I can get my laptop away from my 15 yo daughter, I'll be able to do a quick eval on the Avira.
So far, other than the small delay during email program startup, Clamwin seems to be functioning pretty well and not causing any problems coexisting with AVG.

You are welcome, I am glad you got a luagh out of it :)

Clamwin only scans on demand - it doesn't scan realtime (i.e. automatically scan any file you access). This will help with performance, and it will allow it to coexist, but you have to manage the scanning yourself. You can still execute a program with a virus payload without clamwin complaining.

Hi guys....
So far, I'm kind of liking Avira. I hardly know it's there. It even managed to snag a trojan yesterday.
One problem....
It AUTOMATICALLY starts scanning my computer at noon. I can't figure out a way to change the time of the daily scan. With AVG, I had it going the middle of the night.
Can any of you guys walk me though this? It slows everything down for me when I'm trying to play during the day!
TIA/
