Do we have any American Idol fans?

I'm not in love with this year's format for winnowing 36 down to 12. A few apparently really talented people were not shown during the Hollywood week at all, and came in to these semi-finals with absolutely no momentum. The country guy who got through last week is certainly likable, but I think that other guy we never really saw before outsang him by a mile. I guess I'm not in favor of the show giving America the reins quite so early, given the propensity in years past for phenomena such as the Sanjaya effect. I wonder if we'll see the same with Nick/Norman.

I agree. Yes, I thought the Ricky Braddy guy was much better than the country singer. He is actually a friend of a friend. They went to school together at Belmont College in Nashville. I've been checking out the blogs and they're really pushing him as a wild card. I hope he gets in.

I want to punch Tatiana in the face every second that I see her.
Just had to say that.

I also dislike the 36 to 12 format. I like the twelve that made it but Lord we had to suffer through some historically bad performances.
I loved Norman but not for Idol. I'm not sure what he'd be good on, but I loved his unpredictability.
Tatiana was hard to take when crazy. Then her stupid friends told her to tone it down and damn near ruined her chance to be on the show. They obviously told her to forget what they said, because the crazy was back this week. Too late, alas, for her. I was glad because if I had to go through dealing with her several times a week I don't think I'd make it.
Kara is no fun and she's sucking the fun out of Paula by making her show up sober for work. Foo.
Thanks to the National Enquirer, Simon and Ryan are more fun to watch.
Wild card tonight was fun. Glad Anoop got through.

It appears they had a surplus of talent this year, relatively speaking. Most any of the top 36 rejects could have been top 12 or better in seasons past. Even crazy girl had some decent pipes. And Randy hasn't been able to use the word "pitchy" nearly as much as he would probably like. Agreed about Kara, not ready for AI prime time, and I don't think there's anything four judges can say that can't sufficiently be said by three (or fewer).

Yes, three judges was plenty.
I also liked the way they did the thirteen. Nice surprise and Anoop was so deserving and cute about it that even surprise jaded old me got choked up.
i think the wild card show was needed. The best singer on the entire show made it through. The girl with the tattoos on one arm, I think Megan joy corky was her name. She is a great singer, best voice on the show. She also doesn't sing the same songs as all the other contestants have through the years

No comments on "Michael Jackson Week", even though there were some remarkable moments, but, WOW, was there anyone tonight on "Grand Ole Opry" country music week that you could honestly say needs to go home? Nobody really screwed the pooch in any meaningful way, judges comments notwithstanding. I kind of wished Robert Plant was in the audience for Adam Lambert's take on "Ring Of Fire". And, thank The Maker, Anoop-Dog is back!!!

Well, I can't say that's what was expected, but also can't really argue with it, either. Someone joked to me that the 3G (Gay Goth Guy) Network must have stepped up and voted for Adam. Still not really sold on this "judges save" thing. How would you like to be singing for your life, watching those four huddle up right in front of you while you performed? Hope the shark hasn't been jumped right over the strongest Top 10 ever.

I understand why they have it. Every year we have a surprise jettison where the judges look upset and say "America got it wrong." Okay, I'm with that. I agree. Sometimes America does get it wrong. However, the relentless determination of the show to drag the annoying suspense of "will they or won't they" into every competition is just stupid. They should just roll along and if they want to stop it then stop it. The suspense is provided by us knowing they can do it if they want. Then if they do use it, the audience will be surprised not irritated and led by the nose each week.

So, let's take a straw poll:
Who do you want to win?
Who do you think will win?
(Bearing in mind that the answers given at this early juncture may end up being great fun to reflect upon, after all is said and done.)
dragongrrl
03-19-2009, 10:58 PM
Want: Adam or Anoop(who has no real chance) or Lil. In that order.
Think will win: Lil or Danny or Adam. Also in that order.
But I suck at that sort of thing.
I'll add a category. Who is "worthy" of the save?
I think they'd use the save to pull Lil or Adam off the block. I do also think they could go the whole season without using it.

I was all for Danny at first...now, I'm liking Kris. I know Adam is talented..but I'm tired of him already.
This sounds crazy...but his rendition of the Johnny Cash fan just irritated the hell out of me. It was country music night..so what if he doesn't like country music..be a team player and do what you're supposed to do. It just hit me wrong...you just don't mess with a Johnny Cash song! LOL

Adam will continue to be controversial. He came to the competition with his "style", if you will, already in place. The show's stylists aren't really influencing his "look" much, if any. As to messing with Johnny Cash, I think it's a double-edged sword: contestants are constantly praised for "making the song their own", but criticized if the perception is that they took it too far. Me, I thought it was kinda cool that he didn't throw on a cowboy hat or try to sound like Keith Urban, which he very well could have. By the same token, I've been predicting all season that we'd probably hear a Guns n' Roses song from him if the genre was presented. But, in retrospect, that might be a bit too obvious, and likely would be a bad move on his part.
There will always be fan favorites, but remember, the producers are looking for who will sell the most albums. They can always fix "pitchy" in the studio.

Adam stood out again this week (I still think Ring Of Fire was cool). I think you've nailed who the bottom three should be. I thought everyone else was great, save Lil, who is definitely on the bubble with this performance.

I thought he looked like Elvis meets Kurt Russell circa 1976. There were some moments in that song that he sounded just like Smokey. There's a bunch of YouTubes of him from last year. Undeniably talented.

Adam was spot on w/Ring of Fire. Let's not forget that JC covered a NIN song, so artistry and interpretation is wildly accepted in many markets and genres. Adam's RoF could easily be recorded for its Electronica/Chill appeal.
Last night's acoustic rendition of The Tracks Of My Tears was brilliant in that he sang a beautiful version and just secured his advancement in AI by showing his marketability to a different demographic.

Well she does have a large teeny bopper base who like that she looks like Barbi. But she has a bigger advantage than that. She's the Vote For the Worst candidate as was Sanjaya and Pickler and several other crazy, erratic AI sngers. VFTW has a HUGE "we hate AI and how they do things" following.

There is often a singer who makes their way further in the contest than is deserved, due to their ability to emulate currently popular "vocal stylists". Usually, they don't make it to the top ten, though. The signature quirkinesses of Amy Winehouse, Adele, Corinne Bailey Rae, et. al. factor into both Megan's style and voter popularity. That she's also easy on the eyes is a bonus for her. She got a pass this week, and I would be shocked if she somehow found a way to raise the bar next week, unless the theme is "Songs Sung From the Neck Up". I think we've already seen everything she's got, and it's getting more boring with each passing performance.

I liked Anoop better than the judges this week. Last week was great, but still not his "moment".
Megan Joy. No joy here.
Danny, I hope the fan base won't bestow the "I-don't-need-to-vote-for-him-b/c-he's-so-good" kiss-of-death.
Alison, you rock.
Scott, best performance yet. Still not enough to win. Nice hair.
As to Matt, I so wish he'd done something else. Doing your favorite current band (and "having a lot of fun up there") is historically (again) such a kiss-of-death.
Lil, girl, you got the goods; find the right songs, aight?
Adam, somebody messed with me and said it was Led Zeppelin week. I was so hoping for "Immigrant Song". But "PTFM,WB" was inspired, nonetheless.
Kris, your momentum continues to build. Don't screw it up. Oh, and that was my Mom's favorite song (no joke).

LOL we all have different opinions this week. I'm ready for Megan, Anoop and sad to say..even Scott to go home. I like Matt and Lil..but wasn't in the least impressed this week. I think Adam and Alison were amazing...and Danny was great too...but in the end..my favorite of the night was Kris.
dragongrrl
03-31-2009, 11:48 PM
I liked Kris the best too. Gokey pulled it up, but I liked both Adam and Anoop better than him. Allison sits in there ahead of Gokey too. So that's my top five.
Scott was MUCH better this week, but the hair, although an improvement, was too high for me. He was so tickled when the judges noticed though that I almost started liking it.
My bottom is Megan, Matt(sob), and either Anoop or Lil (as some kind of wake up call). I'd love Megan to go home. "I think my fans liked it." Egads. Right up there with "Caw Caw."
Megan is just to easy on the eyes, she's got me in her trap. GF said I should watch her with a blind fold on.

Thank the heavens. VFTW's eeeevil plot has failed and that smug, silly ass is gone. Her "gee I'm such a good sport" routine made me want to slap her. Then Simon did it for me.
She was, however, graceful in her goodbye and her relationship to her kid is very sweet.

I was ready for her to go too. But, then I thought Simon was an ass to her with his last comments. I felt like she had said.."I don't care" as a defense mechanism. The kid had to know she wasn't even in the league with the rest of the contestants. Not sure how she ever got there to begin with.
dragongrrl
04-02-2009, 07:39 PM
Well, I REALLY liked her in her auditions. I'd forgotten that until they did that little retrospective. She looked different and (to me) came across differently. Her hair was a different color too. Anyway, (again to me) it seemed like she just fell in love with herself and felt she could do whatever she wanted and people would still love her. She was willing to risk in much the same way Adam was willing to risk but with a very different effect at least on me. I do think she deserved to be there and I'm glad she got in the tour. I hope she starts taking it more seriously. She should care what the judges say. She needs a lot of adjustment.
That said, by the end I did not like how she was coming across. I felt like she was disrespectful to Simon and I know he's an ass, but they give those people quite a lovely boost into the limelight and even though dissing Simon is a rite of passage on Idol, I've never liked that. Apparently he didn't either.
She showed class at the end.

Bottom 3 (in no particular order): Scott, Kris, Lil. And, if as expected, deservedly so.
Read a "spoiler" list of tonight's song choices. Have to admit Matt, Danny both far exceeded initial expectations. Anoop redeemed, and back to underdog status, regardless of the Justin Guarini-esque, obviously-forced and ultimately unnecessary mea culpa. Solid, solid performance from Alison: the youngest is already the "artist" the judges seek to see emerge from some of the rest of the pack. Adam once again pulls one out of far left field, to his advantage, but still can't imagine him selling records based on an audio-only performance sans the theatrics.

If you hover over everyone but Adam, they all say "predicted to be in danger of being voted off", and the MOE may place Kris as high as 2nd (doubtful, but we'd never know, would we?). We shall see. His performance last night was another downslope on his rollercoaster. Couldn't have come at a worse time for him. My preference is for Lil or Scott to go. One has been warned to step up her game too many times, and has failed to do so; the other's courage I admire, but he's already gotten more than a couple of passes.

He did sing much better the second time than he did with the electric guitar. I'm sure the decision was hard for all, even Simon.
I feel for Scott, but I'm not unhappy he's gone. He has courage and AI worked pretty well with him. He brought a lot of variety this year. But he hit some almighty crappy notes.

I haven't followed Aussie Idol since 2004, but I'd guess this was this guy's "moment". ("Dicko", in the pink shirt, is Australia's Simon Cowell.) Oddly, the TFF original was faster and actually had a danceable beat, despite the starkness of the subject matter. Subsequent covers have chosen this more "haunting" take, to much better effect, IMO.

What I sincerely hated was the team critiques by the judges. I want to hear Simon critique every contestant. with so many at home voters banking on what the judges say to sway their votes, it is hardly fair for just two judges to comment as they often disagree. you may only hear from the two that didn't like it rather than hear from the two that did like the performance, and vice versa.

I'd say that tonight's vote off show had a feel like everything went exactly as expected. Perhaps too much so... (As in, you knew they were going to use The Save on Matt before they did it, didn't you?)
Was happy to see those judges who didn't get a chance to critique some contestants last night have an opportunity to chime in here and there, albeit too late to have any real effect on voting. Thought it interesting that Randy really liked Kris' performance, as I did not, relative to most of the others'. All things considered, maybe it's Anoop who actually got another chance tonight, rather than Matt or Lil.
that is correct! one of us has too much memory or time on our hands.
It's both a curse and a blessing... (the memory, of course)

Kara last night said what I've been thinking for weeks, that Lil is unable to make the songs "her own" because she really doesn't seem to have an "own". Echoing what Randy said more than once, this is the most talented bunch they've ever had on the same stage, and from here on out, every elimination is going to be disappointing. Tonight should be interesting to see if Matt's reprieve last week bought him any more time after this week.

I want to like Adam..I think he's phenomenal...but, he's just so polished. He's not even in the same caliber as the rest of them.
Ok, but I've been thinking. One year...didn't they have a top three instead of a top two? They let all three do several songs? Am I dreaming this?

Lil and Matt. I don't want to lose Anoop. He looked so cute last night. I wouldn't mind Gokey being in bottom three. He doesn't impress me. I'd like to see an Allison/Adam finish. To me, Gokey is coasting on his personal losses. He's just not that good.

Some years the final three are all strong enough you might think that, but no, it's always come down to two.

Way harsh! "Band Of Gold" was ahead of its time, released in 1970, actually preceding the disco era by several years. Freda is 66, and yet, has a set of guns that would make both Tina Turner and Angela Bassett jealous. I noted no dropped lyrics.

There was really no one not to like tonight. The recap is from the dress rehearsal (as are, apparently, all of Paula's less-than-spontaneous critiques). Matt sounded better there than live. I predicted we would hear the word "pitchy" after his performance. What I would not predict is Simon's glowing praise of him. Nothing to fault from Kris tonight. Allison's restraint not to make it "rawk" was well-advised; how a 17-year old makes it seem that effortless is amazing. Gokey continues to prove he is better than his detractors assert. Adam, for as good as he is, is becoming predictable. I'm wondering if an "Adam's so good I don't need to vote for him" sentiment will kick in, and that it might be the undoing of the foregone conclusion for some that he is the winner.

Funny story.... when my dear old maw was alive, had an amusing American Idol experience. Her roomate at Northshore Regional had been whining and b*tching to go home.
The old gal's doc finally sprung her.
She called her daughter in Picayune.... "Honey! I can leave! Come pick me up!". The daughter told her that as soon as AMERICAN IDOL was over (about 10 minutes into the broadcast) she'd buzz into Slidell to pick up her mother.
At the time, I was properly horrified, but can see from this forum, that the show is quite addicting. :)

D-listed is a guilty pleasure of mine. A gossip site that is run by the very gay Michael K. He calls Adam, Glamberace. Gotta love that.
"Glamberace was in full glittery force last night! I not only tasted the rainbow, but I choked in it. When he strutted down the stairs at the beginning, I expected him to rip off his "guido dyke at her own wedding" outfit to reveal fishnet thigh highs and sequined pasties. That was some burlesque sh*t right there! Dita Von Teese who? Seriously, Adam should've climbed into a giant martini glass
and given himself a sponge bath. That was the only thing that was missing. And you might have noticed that during his SCREEEECHING final note, the sun rose and then set again in a matter of seconds. That's because the earth was trying to spin Glamberace off the planet to end all his hollerin'"

Well I agree with the Entertainment Tonight guy:
4. It's quite possible to win an entire season on the strength of a single note. I am, of course, referring to that insane, extended glory note at the end of Adam's ''Feeling Good,'' the one that reminded me of a glittery comet falling from the sky. Don't look away, people, because you never know when or if you'll get another opportunity to see/hear it. And (WHA?!) you certainly won't be privy to an encore on the Idol end-of-episode replays, which was clearly reflecting Adam's not-as-breathtaking dress-rehearsal rendition. I know I've brought this up before, but it bears repeating: If networks airing everything from football to baseball to tennis to figure skating can show us an almost instantaneous replay from live sporting events, how come the same technology can't be employed to make sure we see the live performance replays, and not dress-rehearsal footage, paired with those coveted 866-numbers?

An altogether less-than-satisfying episode. Adam: karaoke Zeppelin, if there is such a thing. I was less-than-impressed. I guess, given the circumstances, GnR was too much to hope for. Allison: I agree, bad song choice, but, like Danny, you were better in the duet. You still rock. Kris: the judges didn't hear how good you actually were. Allison should be worried. Danny: Aerosmith? What were you thinking?
"Renegade" was a great duet song choice for Kris, his vocal on that song was very reminiscent of Tommy Shaw. Danny's duet performance was actually better, IMO, than that of his solo. Both of them looked extremely uncomfortable afterwards during the judges' comments.
Adam and Allison, I thought, got an unfair advantage in the "who goes last gets remembered best" department. Danny and Kris have reason to complain.
Random thoughts: Allison looked great. The judges, across the board, were just plain stupid tonight.

I agree that Kris was good. I enjoy him. I like how he changes the pacing of a song, altering its sound.
Loved Adam's and Allison's solos. I wasn't as impressed with their duet as I felt, for rock, they sounded kind of polished. But they were having so much fun that I enjoyed them anyway.

I missed Adam and Allison's solo performances, but they both rocked their duet.
The reports out there are that the judges went nuts for Adam...maybe to make sure he gets into the finals.
Simon was on Ellen today and said he'd like to see Adam win it, as he has the most talent, originality and added "Adam Lambert is brave: I like the fact he’s fearless. He’s not playing it safe. A lot of the people that take part in these shows want to sing ‘Wind Beneath My Wings’ every week because it’s a sappy song. He’s got guts.”

I agree..I think Danny and Kris were definitely at a disadvantage tonight. I know Adam is amazing..but, I'm sick of hearing about it. This is beginning to remind me of the year that Reuben and Clay were in the finals....all you ever heard about was Reuben.
I thought Kris was better than what he was given credit for tonight. I wasn't that impressed with the Adam/Allison duet.
I still would have liked to see Adam do Queen!

The judges' glowing praise for a contestant doesn't necessarily translate into higher viewer votes. Conversely, the perception that a contestant has been judged too harshly can often result in viewer backlash votes.
I also don't perceive Danny as being smug about his talent. I just have to wonder, however, where that song choice came from. Maybe a knee jerk in response to Adam's choice?
And, was Simon on drugs thinking Allison should have done Queen's "Somebody To Love"? Clearly, it was the Jefferson Airplane song of the same title that was under consideration.

Constantine - total guilty pleasure of mine - is said to be surprised. "It's very surreal." Fun.

Well Kris has made it a real race so I'm stumped. I thought each had one good performance and one meh performance with Kris coming out best overall. So I don't know. Dial Idol has Adam on top with Kris second but it's so tight they can't be sure. Adam could be first or third.
I don't think Adam screamed in Mad World, did he?

Pardon me while I blaspheme, but I think I would have preferred a Danny/Kris final, as inconceivable as that might seem, certainly given tonight's results. I keep thinking that Adam has brought an element of professional experience to the competition that we always knew was there, lurking, in the form of singers with previous record deals, etc. But, in the backs of our minds, we suppressed all that because this is supposed to be the show where some total unknown shoots to a level of super-stardom that they never would have, but only for their friends or relatives having urged them to try out for AI. In other words, I consider Adam the ultimate ringer.
I also think of it in terms of, "whose album do I want to listen to 12 cuts in a row?" I can't imagine sitting through a even a handful of "Whole Lotta Love"s, where I uncomfortably visualize the big note coinciding with that extended tongue inching ever closer to the microphone. I'm now rooting for a major Kris upset, although chances of it happening are slim.

Surely you don't think that Danny-o is going to fade from the musical picture. You'll have an option to choose his album. As for Adam, I'm counting on him being polished up a bit more to either focus his screams or tone them down. Could be wrong, we'll have to see. As for Kris, the come from behind kid, WHOO HA!! Judges dissed him and dismissed him and he just kept coming up more valuable at the right times. He'd roll along doing nothing then knock me out with something. He could easily win this.
No matter what, the top three, NO the top four will be in our future for a while yet.
Voting for Adam but Kris or Adam as winner is good with me.
(Edible, I looked at your name for the finale and thought that if it had been Gokey and Adam, my moniker would have been GoAdam.)

I'm hoping I'll have an option as good as Elliot Yamin's debut album. I also am looking forward to his follow-up (in stores now).
What I'm saying is, as much as we're all enjoying Adam now, I don't envision him selling albums as a solo artist. I think Kris' second performance last nite was the monkeywrench Danny wasn't expecting, Danny's poor song choices of-late not-withstanding. (But his swan song was confirmation he has the chops.)

Ok, I'll throw my two cents in. I don't really see Adam as a rocker. He's more of a show man. I can't imagine buying his cd. As for Danny, Kris, and Allison...yes, I would.
I love rock music...but, I see Adam more as a very talented kid that could sing anything thrown at him. It just doesn't seem true to me. He seems too polished...like a well oiled machine. He was in it to win..and he most likely will.
I will be voting for Kris....over and over and over again:P

well, Kara sucks as a songwriter for AI. not even the judges, Kara included, wanted to say they hated that song and would only say the Kradam should be judged on the season as a whole. Kara knew she was writing this for the finals, and it suited neither of them. off with her head.
Go Adam!

I agree. Go Adam!
They both did a great job. Loved Kris's first song. The second was just okay. The third was the worst for both of them.
I adore Adam so I think he knocked it out of the park on the first two.

It's a reworked Ken doll. Very accurate I thought.
Loved Adam's vampire look in Mad World. Very hot coat. I want that coat for my new Adam doll. When I find time to make him.

Dial Idol has the two separated by one point which is incredibly tight. Kris is ahead. Vote for the Worst is backing Kris and Gokey's minister has told Gokey's fans to vote for Kris. It's looking like Kris will take it.
If that's what happens, I'm happy for Kris. I'd be happier if it was Adam, of course, but as I said before, I think the future will be bright for each of the top four.

Well I'm taking my Adam doll and his new hot coat and going home.
The finale was mixed what with the Golden Idols (retch) but the guest stars were amazing and lots of fun. Love Kris. Love Adam. America got it wrong in my eyes but that's life.
See you next year.

And, for the second time this week, the underdog emerges victorious (Olympic gymnast Shawn Johnson on DWTS being the first).

Adam won't be struggling for money or work, thats for sure.
The verdict surprised me though!

at least Adam does not have to record that horror of a song Kara wrote...there is a God.
noticed Simon did not stand up and applaud Kris' victory.

Well Simon and I have something in common. But I was prepared for the let down.
Adam singing with both Queen and Kiss was quite a treat. Kris and Keith Urban put on a good show. Fergie, Steve Martin, Rod, Lionel, Cyndi could they have gotten more diverse? Nice job.
I also feel for Kris about that hideous song. Someone said it sounded like a bad Disney song and I have to agree. He sang it MUCH better tonight than he did last night, but apparently he and Adam didn't get the thing until just before they went on.

At the end when Kris was on the stage thing behind the judges...Simon stood up and shook his hand.

Well the show is history but I have to say that Kris is such a gracious winner. And he and Adam are absolutely adorable together. Great interview with Kris at the link and then at the bottom of the article, an even better one with Adam in which we discover Adam doesn't know what "doozy" means, he admits that he discovered his signature wailing was not as effective as when he "brings it in close," they touch base with some of the contestants Adam helped out, that Adam feels he needs to be made fun of now and again because he's "kind of ridiculous". During the hometown segment, Adam cleaned off the nail polish on one of his thumbnails and painted Kris's corresponding thumbnail in a show of friendship and unity.

Did you see the article where Brian May of Queen said they would like to have a "meaningful conversation" with Adam?

Yep. I follow Adam on twitter and he says he's working on his album and doesn't plan to join Queen and also that he hasn't been asked. He says he's been let know that they want to try some stuff out and he'd love to do that in the future.
And Admin, the underdog streak continues with Susan Boyle losing BGT not to Shaheen as many considered, but to the hip hop group Diversity who are just tons of fun. The first link is to their try out which I think was better than their winning routine.

Like Adam, I'm sure Susan will be fine despite her meltdown from before. She's great. I love her too.
