My sister has been selected to be queen of Mardi Gras in Vicksburg. I was going to send a king cake but someone told me there is such a thing as a Queen's cake. I don't see it on Maurice's or Haydel's website. Does anyone know who makes them and what they are like?

La Spiga Bakery (now closed) that was in the Marigny used to make an EXCELLENT one. It was a light cake, in the standard oval shape, with an almond flavor and edible flowers.

I would think someone else makes them, but not sure who.

Antoine's on Stumpf Blvd in Gretna. Right across the street from home depot. It is a great cake, with all the standard fillings spread around the cake in sections

The Queen's cake la Spiga had was based on the original french version. Brioche almond flavor. Not the errupting volcano overload coffee cake.

(I miss La Spiga it was on Chartres off of Elysian Fields):( and at the mid city farmers market.

Why not make your own?
Just go to the old board and ask powered sugar for a recipe:)

IIRC, lemon, bavarian cream, cream cheese, apple, and one other flavor.
Five in all & they are sectioned. So depending on the size of your slice you have 2 or 4 of each flavor. I am pretty sure the spots in between are small, but enough to get a slice without any filling.

I like Antoine's king cakes & queen cakes.
