Tried this place out for breakfast today. As far as I can tell, it's only been open a couple of weeks. Yes, I know "the rule", but decided to take one for the team anyway. Mrs. Slow had eaten lunch there last week (her review of that follows), and we've been looking for some place different for Sunday breakfast, so we went.

Arriving shortly after 9am, there was no wait, and we were invited to sit wherever we pleased. As the name suggests, it's a diner, so you have the choice of counter, booths, and there are tables at the far end as well as in a smaller space off to the left as you enter. This is BTW, the old Denny's location at Causeway and I-10, totally refurbed, bright, clean and neat as a pin.

We settled into a booth and were quickly greeted by our server, Phillip(?). The menu is a bit extensive for diner fare, so we needed a few minutes to digest it all. We were informed that the entire menu is available all day, but we were there for breakfast, and ended up not taking the time to look at the other offerings in detail.

You can choose from pretty much standard breakfast-type items, or some slightly more ambitious things, such as several dishes based on their hash browns, and the "City Benedict" (which Mrs. S. had), consisting of andouille sausage, tomato, poached eggs, spinach and hollandaise atop two English muffin halves. I tried a bite-- very tasty. I went for the chicken fried steak, which came with two eggs, and my choices of toast and the hash browns. I asked for the white gravy on the side so I could put as much or as little as I thought it required. It was cooked and seasoned well enough that it didn't even need it, but it was noteworthy that the gravy itself was actually almost more meat than gravy.

The chef, who works the pass from the counter side of the window, came by to ask us how everything was. With the exception of my hash browns, everything was perfectly prepared. The waiter, who was extremely attentive throughout our visit, said he wished he had been told about it earlier so he could have fixed it, and even offered to wrap up a new serving to take home. As full as I was by that point, I declined, and as of this writing, I'm still not even hungry.

Hopefully, this place will do well, and the quality of food and service we received today will keep pace with demand.

Thanks for the report, I'll put it in my Sunday agenda in the future.

Had all intentions of doing a breakfast this morning, but by the time we were ready to leave it was 1:30, so we had pizza instead.

Taking care of my Mother post-op delays me in the mornings. No matter how early I get up, to take care of her and her aging dog takes mucho time.

Me and the guys from work have been going there quite a bit since they openend, we're glad to have something decent in the area.

I've had the bacon cheese burger and the buffalo chicken sandwhich, both came with fries. Both were quite good.

My co-workers have been stuck on the pancakes for lunch, they are very good.

Thanks Low n Slow for the heads up.

We went today for lunch. We met the owner, very nice guy, Jason White, and the Diner Manager, Kenny.

As you stated, everything was nice and clean, and just what you expect from an old fashion diner.

I had the Chicken Caeser Wrap, my husband had the bacon/smoked turkey/avacado on a bread of pretzel. Interesting concept.

I look forward to going back and trying several other dishes, for lunch, but can't wait to go for breakfast one weekend.

I have heard good things from others on other forums too.

The people at the other table got a po-boy, looked very good.

Oh and btw, they make the onion rings homemade. No frozen stuff there.

Portions are huge.

And a PS....Jag he said he knows who you are.

thanks everybody for referring me to city diner. I love this place. it is everything I look for in recovering from a hangover on saturday and sunday mornings. I had the crawfish hash brown creation and it was nothing short of utopia. Im am almost 300 pounds and I can genuinely appreciate good food and this plate was divine. the service was excellent as well. I also got to meet Jason the owner. I have one rule when it comes to eating out. trust the fat man, he obvioulsy knows what he's doing. Thanks to all and needless to say where i'll be spending the majority of my weekends.

Went back again Sunday ourselves. More business, more staff. Lots of good chatter in the kitchen. Felt "diner-y". Looking good. Got a take out menu I will try to scan and attach if not too big.

Yvette, what's that pretzel bread R had his sammich on? I don't see it on the menu.

Yvette, what's that pretzel bread R had his sammich on? I don't see it on the menu.

The waiter suggested it. Imagine a pretzel cut in half, so the dark part is not showing. The texture of a pretzel withouth the salt, but soft enough to be a bun. He suggested it because the buns on all the other sandwiches are tall for a lack of a better word. You know when the sandwich is so tall you can not get the bite in your mouth. I hate that.

Not long ago, in a gift pack for Xmas, we were given pretzel chips, much like the bagel chips you see in the deli department at the grocery. They were delicious.

I had the bacon cheeseburger for lunch again today. It was good. I really like the buffalo chicken sandwhich best though. I think I've had that three times already.

Jag, after you wrote about that yesterday, I HAD to go have it today. Was wondering if I was going to run into you.

I had the Best buffalo chicken sandwich, with again the home made onion rings. Mine was on jalapeno cheese bun, very good. My husband said he had the best grilled chicken sandwich ever. It was on wheat bun. This bun was incredible. I am not particularlly a whole wheat bun person, but this one was so different than any I have ever had.

Word is getting out, as the place was packed today. I met the mother in law today. OMG she is so young looking, My husband asked her if she was Mrs. Jason when she was coming around tables to ask if everything was good, and she said no, she is -the Mother in law. Have not met his wife yet, but I guess she will look like she is 10!

Still can't wait to go for breakfast.

Oh and LownSlow....Jason does have a goatee, I looked today :)

DH and I have been under the weather this week. Kids were hungry for pancakes last night and I didn't feel up to making them. City Diner is just a few blocks away from the house so we loaded up the car and headed over. Kids and DH had the pancakes. They were very buttery. I thought they had a slight vanilla scent but my sense of smell may be off from the cold. The kids loved them. I had the two egg breakfast, grits, bacon and biscuit. They were nicely done. I know nothing we ate was adventurous but I look forward to returning when we feel better to try some other things on the menu.

BTW, the staff and service was great and the owner came to our table to see how we are doing. A nice place and I am glad to have it in the neighborhood!

A couple of my go-to breakfast places Uptown were inexplicably closed this morning, so I tried this place out. I got the chicken fried steak, which is something I don't get often, but I was pretty hungry. The chicken fried steak was pretty good, although Ms. Gourmondo, who hails from CFS-land, would not have approved of the gravy. It is thick and lumpy, actually a little on the spicy side - not a lot, but if you're usd to Texas-style cream gravy you may notice little kick. I actually liked that, but also like my gravy really warm, so I would have to take off a point for temperature. Everything else was fine and the service is most attentive and gracious. I wouldn't say it's worth a journey from Uptown, but if I lived in Metairie, I would be trying it again soon. I will try it again sometime. The chicory coffee is great. Don't go if you're too hungover - the ingress and egress to that location is not the most straight-forward. Analytical minds like JAG may have no problem, but the cartographically-challenged may need a couple trips 'round the block to figure it out.

It's about 20 steps from work for me...so I have zero problem navigating my way there at least twice a week...LOL

I always get the jalapeno chedder bun, it's so good. Their fries seem to have gotten better also. I'm so glad to finally have a good place by work, I don't even have to drive there. My budget and pants don't even seem to mind...yet.

Yvette, that's funny, last time I went in, Friday I think, I was actually looking around to see if you were there! LOL

.Thanks to everyone who recommended this place. It is minutes from our house and we are always looking for someplace appropriate to take our 2 year old. Let me start by saying when I first saw this place I would have never tried it without prior knowledge that it was decent. My memories of the Denny's are way too powerful. Unfortunately, my first comment when we entered was, " It still smells like Denny's" Fortunately that was the only similarity. I had the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich on the pretzel bun with onion rings. It tasted exactly like a buffalo chicken sandwich should. The chicken was fried to perfection and the buffalo sauce was great. I thought the onion rings were too thick, I like mine thin and crispier. I would like to try their chicken wings next time, although I have sworn them off on numerous previous occasions. Hubby had the blue cheese burger which looked good, but I did not get a bite.....bastard! Child's chicken tenders were crisp and greaseless, a shame to waste on a 2 year old!!! Service attentive and a steady stream of patrons. Hope they do well and will recommend to others

Analytical minds like JAG may have no problem, but the cartographically-challenged may need a couple trips 'round the block to figure it out.Sadly, I went completely sober (albeit after a long day at the office), and had to circle three times to figure out where the restaurant was. I'm glad you said it, 'cause I was so embarrassed, I wouldn't have admitted it unless someone else had the same difficulty finding the place! None the less, clearly worth the effort.

We tried it for the first time Saturday. I guess my expectations were hyped from all these posts but I was a bit disappointed. Maybe we just didn't order the right thing. I got the meatball po-boy. The meatballs were good but the sauce tasted like chunky Prego. I asked for it not dressed (never understood why someone would want lettuce & tomato on meatballs) but with cheese and she kept asking if I wanted swiss cheese to the point that I finally said okay. I don't know if they were out of mozzarella or she really thought swiss should be on it. I got the onion rings. They were okay but too greasy for me and half the batter had fallen off into the plate.
My husband got the grilled shrimp wrap. I don't know why he orders wraps because he doesn't want any lettuce in it. So he got a wrap with grilled shrimp and ceasar dressing which dripped all over his plate but looked good.
I thought maybe we would try it again for breakfast but my co-worker went twice over the weekend and didn't care for it either. She said on some dishes the hash browns are those little cubes you get from Cisco in a bag and some are the shredded version. Her husband asked for shredded hash browns on a dish that comes with the cubes and the waitress told him they weren't allowed to substitute.
Prices were reasonable and the waitress was nice but when the owner went in the back or left, the kitchen staff was a bit obnoxious cutting up but I do realize we were there at an off time. I might try it again some day. The pretzel bread sounds interesting but I didn't see a sandwich that I would want it on.

Not to judge, but City Diner is not the type of place I would order a grilled shrimp wrap.

I'm chuckling because I drove right past it today... made what I THOUGHT was gonna be a circle... heehee....

Here's a tip, get on the service road and turn INTO the LaQuinta, then park real fast. :)

The first thing that struck me was how very clean the place is. I love that. I enjoy watching what others are getting... those pancakes looked excellent.

I got what JAG and Shannon ordered... the buffalo chicken sammich on jalepeno bread... oooo boy - delicious! And HUGE. I brought home half of it. The service is excellent too.

I'll be taking my husband there for breakfast this weekend.

It sort of reminds me of Camillia Grill, excellent (somewhat unexpected) food, excellent service.... except that when I say it's CLEAN, I'm talkin' squeeky. :)

My husband and I went to City Diner for breakfast yesterday.

Isa - they've gone to 24 hours! Tom and I talked about how much we would have used it during our college days. :)

The breakfast I ordered was enormous. Tom and I easily could have split it. It came with a side of pancakes... and they looked like a regular stack of pancakes, not a smaller version you usually get in a combo meal like that. Everything was delicious, good quality. The bacon is thick, the sausage is not a cheap brand, and the waitstaff is sooooo nice.

Next time I go I'm going to get the shrimp and grits, I'll bet that's wonderful.

AND.... it's not expensive! And clean, did I mention it's clean? lol I hope that keeps up now that it's open all night.

I went and tried this place for breakfast yesterday and came away quite satisfied.
I had what they try to describe on the menu as a large order of hasbrowns with your choice of toppings based on which plate you order.
So I ended up with the hashbrowns, topped with two fried eggs, topped with shrimp and andouillie, covered with a cajun cream sauce. And for good measure it came with an english muffin. It was very good and way too much food.
The service was excellent, which basically means she was there to fill my coffee when it ran low.

Like others have said, it seemed that the prices were very reasonable.

I could see where the staff's conversations and goofyness might could get your nerves as it was kind of bothersome listening to the serving staff go back and forth with the kitchen people when I first sat down, but after I woke up and had a cup of coffee I warmed up to it all.

BTG, that banter reminds me of Camillia Grill, and I enjoy it.

It's funny, I had this reply window opened when friends called and said, let's meet in 30 minutes at City Grill! LOL

Today I tried the philly cheese steak sandwich on french. Deeeelicious. And I brought half of it home!

Both kids had sleepovers Sat night so I got to go to DH's gig. In deference to the old days where we would spend the gig money at La Peniche, we went to City Diner for a bite at 1am Sunday. They actually had a small crowd in there! Food was good as usual but we have had issues with one waiter a couple of times where he brings the wrong food. Even brought an item we did not order. We never say anything because he is nice enough but if it keeps up I'll have to speak up next time. Still, good food, good prices and great hours for night owls.

If I'm not mistaken, I saw Yvette's hubby in there the last 3 out of 5 times I was there! It's quite the popular place.

It's very close to work, I can walk there. It's good and the staff is very nice to me. I'm getting tired of french fries every day...I'm thinking a small side salad instead of fries or the onion rings option might be a good idea especially for those of us who use it as a lunch break and go often...maybe I'll suggest that.

And yes, Judi, so glad they are open 24 hrs!
We work really late sometimes.

Last week I saw the older gentleman I always see in Camellia grill late at night! We've bumped into each other at late night haunts for about 20 yrs!
We always joke that he's following me, but it was clear to me that he was really digging City Diner. It was his first time & he was so happy to find a new late night place!

Camellia Grill (was there last week as well - someone twisted my arm) has gone so downhill, I really never want to eat there again. So very sad... but true.

Aww, I'm so sorry to hear that Isa. I haven't been back to CG since they reopened. I have wonderful memories of it, going back to my childhood. It was a favorite of ours after 7:30a.m. Sunday Mass at Mater Dolorosa.

I've tried all the major features, I think, on City Grill's menu. Everything has been very good.

But yesterday after my philly steak and cheese, I decided that I'll stick to "breakfast" when I go there. They do it SO well, and I love breakfast. (they serve it all the time, yea!)

I just wanted to write in and thank all of you for the feedback! Positive and negative, I am using it to try and improve our food and service. Just from the posts that I have read on here we have made the decision to roll out a new menu sometime in April. As of right now we are thinking about doing away with the wraps, and adding a section for a choice of a half sandwich with a cup of soup or a side salad. We are also going to be getting a more extensive dessert menu, we are going to be adding milkshakes, sundaes, and a bigger selection of pies, cakes, and a brownie ala mode. If any of you have any feedback about things you would like to see on the menu I am all ears, and yes I read this forum every day so keep the feedback coming it is the only way we can keep trying to improve.

If I'm not mistaken, I saw Yvette's hubby in there the last 3 out of 5 times I was there! It's quite the popular place.

It's very close to work,

You are right, he is there at least two or three times a week. He goes with clients or his two sons who also work in his office which is just two blocks away. He constantly raves about all the new things he has been trying. Right now he new kick is the gumbo, shrimp and grits and shrimp etouffee.

He just called from there, he's out to lunch, I am home with the handy man:rolleyes:

JAG, you should tell him you are there, he is horrible with names, even though we have eaten together. Damn, every time I meet him there, I never see you

Note to Jason:
the wraps were good, just too big, and they didn't stay wrapped tightly enough. Just my humble opinion. Maybe they just need to be re-worked.

JudiB
03-10-2009, 08:08 PM
Yvette, I haven't had the gumbo or the shrimp etoufee, those I must try!

Jason, I'd love to see a run of the mill club sandwich. LOL... you know, thin sliced turkey, bacon, lett & tom. That's the only thing I can think of that isn't on the menu.

And I LOVE the idea of half a sandwich and soup or salad, that would be perfect.

We love the place obviously, ya'll are doing a great job!

My husband and I took some relatives to CD yesterday morning for breakfast. We had a great one.

They gave me a 'frequent diner' card to fill out. After a certain amount is reached, you get six percent off a meal... or you can donate that to a charity. There were several to choose from. I thought that was very cool. I don't have the paper in front of me, but I remember JPAS, SPCA, Children's Hospital.... but there were more.

Revisited the Diner this weekend to find a few menu revisions. The wraps are gone, replaced by soup du jour/half sandwich combo offerings. Since last we dined, there appears to have been secured a permit for beverages of low alcoholic content, and the installation of mixers for malts and shakes. There's some new major pig-out thing called "bottom of the bowl" that should appeal to the after-hours mega-munchies crowd. There's also now BBQed Shrimp, too (this is a diner, right?)

On the breakfast front, a Crab Cake Benedict dish has been added to the menu. Holy crap, low-carbers stand back. A duo of poached eggs sits atop crab cakes which themselves sit stacked atop rounds of polenta, all smothered with the house Cajun sauce, with a sprinkle of green onion. It was all I could do to finish both and waddle out the door. As an aside, I wonder why this particular dish comes with the same grits-or-hash browns options as the rest of the breakfast menu (polenta and grits?). Either makes the already-filling dish too heavy, and maybe just a cup of fresh cut fruit instead would have been a better accompaniment. Even though I was totally stuffed, I was wishing I had a piece of toast to sop up the very last of the egg yolk and Cajun sauce. (Burp!)

I went today and was really impressed. I had the cajun burger on jalepeno cheddar bread and it was awesome. Wife had the club and loved it. The cook was going to each table asking everyone how their food was. Super-reasonably priced. What a great addition to the breakfast/24-hour food scene.

I had a delightful lunch today, (I really miss my lunches on Monday and City Diner!!) with old friends and new.

The menu has expanded a bit, and there were some interesting choices. I would have loved to try the corn and crab bisque, which was the soup of the day. It was too hot of day though. LOL, I ended up getting this absolutely decadant bread bowl, which is buttered, seasoned and browned, filled with seafood, (crabmeat, shrimp and crawfish), cheeses and that wonderful cream dill sauce.

Yeah, didn't go light or anything in deference to the killer heat. :)

For the cartographically challenged, the I-10/Causeway cloverleaf has four service roads facing it. They are named by their compass points i.e. NE, NW, SW, SE..(North is towards the lake)...the diner is on the South East one but in the address the South and East are seperated by "I-10 Service Rd"

All of these are one way until they get away from the cloverleaf...so City Diner is accessed by taking Causeway North to the SE service road (slow down as it's very near Causeway) and going around the block clockwise (Galleria)to W. Napoleon will get you back to Causeway...unless you're going to visit Nanette at Gatehouse...or going I-10 East.

I guess I'll see some of you there....and I did grow up in the neighborhood :toast:

LOL Jerry....

Getting into the parking lot really is a challenge. Get on the service road, and as SOON as you see LaQuinta, turn in!! Park...

Then look around and there it is.

Jason, if you go full service with the liquor license, please please please don't turn the place into a bar with bar food. :( There are so many of those.

Nannette, I don't know what led you to Gatehouse, but my aunt lives there and loves it. You'll be really close now... and on my rare days off, RARE, lol, I go on Mondays to meet JAG and Shannon... and whoever is available is always invited and welcomed. :)

I'll be a Metairie girl in no time at all :).... looking forward to meeting many of you.... this joint is right around the corner from the apartment.... thought it might be a fun meeting spot, but.............

Please tell me that they have a liquor license.... or at least beer/wine? *crossing my fingers*

Isabella,

I am only on a set schedule to be at the diner on Sunday nights. I do stop in frequently everyday but never at any set time.

Just returned from a nice bite and a few beers at the City Diner. 'twas a pleasure meeting Camilla, Sean, and finally our Jason.

Will report tomorrow, but assured Jason that I'm looking forward to future visits.:toast:

Plus, he saved us the embarrassment of stopping in for a quick drink at the bar around the corner.... the Sanctuary. Lesbian joint. Said they wouldn't even let Dom in the door.....glad I asked him about the place. *grinning*

You could have just sent him to the strip club if he felt rejected.

Thought I'd give a quick post on our dinner last night.... we each had 3 domestic beers.

Dom had the big Country Breakfast:

2 eggs; 3 pancakes; bacon; sausage; ham; grits or hashbrowns; & an english muffin, toast, or a biscuit.

The plate of pancakes on the side was much larger than expected. The bacon out of this world.... thick cut and lean. Hashbrowns were nicely seasoned....garlic and onion, perhaps?

He brought half of his dinner home.

I had the Club Sandwich on White Toast. Plenty of meat. Very tasty. Was surprised that it wasn't a "triple decker", but it didn't matter- served with fries.... took half of my sandwich home.

Got outta there for 40 bucks..... $33+ change and a tip.

I assured Jason that I'd be returning. I think it'll be the perfect place to stop on the way home from Tulane, order a sandwich to go, and sip on a beer while I'm waiting.

Oh yeah..... within moments, Jason turned me into a "true believer" when it came to his deep fried burgers..... you could see the SPARKS in his eyes describing it! Very nice group of people. It was very pleasant. Thumbs UP.:toast:

Went first time for late lunch Sunday. Goldilocks had the Mushroom & Swiss Burger, I had Chicken Fried Steak plate, & split an order of Onion Rings. All A-1 (and biiiggg portions). Interesting, the side of green beans was grilled and, to my mind, the home run!

They were clearing out after a busy lunch crowd and we got to overhear the manager (Kenny) giving the wait staff (pretty young) pointers - talk to the customers, make sure everything is good, apologize and promptly correct any mistakes, be happy, explain the dishes ...... - what a concept! Staff coaching!

I'll be back - may take me a while to work through the whole menu.

IMO Kenny is an asset to the diner. Things go much smoother when he's working.

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to let you all know that we are going to be starting deliveries next monday. We have had such a large request from the local community and businesses that we have decided to give it a shot.

What's your delivery area? Will you be delivering to Old Jefferson or Ochsner?

Great question! The first couple of weeks we are going to try and delivery from i-10 to the lake only on causeway in the northern direction. On the south side of I-10 we are going to start off going down causeway to airline. We are going to deliver to the neighborhoods south of i-10 on both sides of the causeway. If we do develop eneough business in any one area we will consider delivering. I just want to make sure we get the bugs out of the system before we start getting spread out.
