View Full Version : Do you hate Thanksgiving?

It seems while there are numerous Christmas haters out there, I am one of small but vocal minority of those who hate Thanksgiving. Let me count the ways:
1) The food. If this food is so great, why do we have it once a year? I never ever roast turkey. I loathe cranberry anything. Stuffing is generally ok, if it involves sausage or something. I can do mashed potatoes any time I want. I mean what is so special about this overly fattening, morass of crap that doesn't really go together anyway.
2) Four day weekend but you can't go anywhere. After last year, I swore off traveling home for T-giving. I thought about going to Vegas or the Islands or something this year but I literally couldn't envision myself waiting in a security line at the airport or dealing with the numerous hidden charges that are now abundant with every airline but Southwest.
3) Bayou Classic. T-giving in NOLA is great. Generally great weather, lots of football but then we have this complete cluster f-ck descend on downtown and the FQ and anyone who is pigmentally challenged is forced to cower uptown at Dos Jefes for three days. Where is the humanity in this? Can we please rotate this game amongest Houston, Atlanta and NOLA, anything so I can get my city back, please.
4) The obligation of having to go over someone's house. Look I appreciate the invitation but really if I have four days to do nothing, I want to be able to come and go as I please, drink lots of alcohol and smoke cigars. Please leave me alone.

You must go to the wrong house......smoked turkey, fried turkey, merliton casserole, stuffed artichokes. Oh yeah, my mother-in-law is Italian. In Vicksburg, we have smoked turkey, cornbread dressing and tons of desserts. Mashed potatoes on Thanksgiving! No wonder you hate it.

Four day weekend? I asked my boss off for nearly two months but my co-worker is taking off so she insisted someone be here. So after I ticked off my sisters by telling them I wouldn't be coming home this year, she sends me an e-mail last weekend that I could take off as a vacation day. So I'm here at work and actually getting something done (I'm on a break). I agree with you about flying though; not worth the trouble.
4) The obligation of having to go over someone's house. Look I appreciate the invitation but really if I have four days to do nothing, I want to be able to come and go as I please, drink lots of alcohol and smoke cigars. Please leave me alone.
My families are so much more fun. Is your family Southern Baptist, Pentacostal or something? We start out with mimosas and yesterday ended up with some Wild Turkey. No cigars for me, thanks.
But the number one thing I love about Thanksgiving is no gifts. You don't have to buy one, you don't have to get one, you just eat, drink, gab and enjoy.

LOL Hey now....I grew up Southern Baptist...we started our day off early with mimosas, moved on to champagne and pinot noir. Drank too much...ate too much...a good day was had by all. I, for one..love Thanksgiving! Yes, I wasn't home with my family...but I will be for Christmas.
Ladywhowaits and I fixed dinner...Jag came over and had dinner with us...much wine was gone thru...we met a new friend to play with. It was a great day. Doug did tell us at one point though that we need to find him a man. I guess champagne and three talkative women got the best of him. He was asleep and in bed by 9 pm.

Got to go with you on #3, Bam Bam. Very politically incorrect, but also very true. My family ceased to even consider downtown/FQ on Tgvng weekend about 20 years ago. It just ain't worth it! Aside from that local situation, I love Thanksgiving - predictable menu and all.

kc and Jag, it sounds like ya'll had a BLAST.
Now see bambam, that's what the day is about. No presents, no commercialized crap... just great food and drink and good friends.
Sigh... except for me, who was forced to go to The StoveTop crowd's place and held hostage with a very bland meal that included the ever disgusting "snap bean casserole" with canned soup and canned greasy onion rings.
But! I'm doing Christmas and it's going to be a GREAT meal. :) There will be turkey and andouille gumbo, spiced pumpkin cheesecake with bourbon praline sauce..... and BOTH OF MY CHILDREN!!!!!!!!!!! WOOWOOOOOOOO

Judi's inlaws prefer the Stove Top to homemade oyster dressing, they rather Picadilly to a home cooked, from the heart meal....
Judi, we did have a great time. I had to hurry up and finish the work I was doing and get over there, because while I was slaving away in the lab they already killed the first bottle of Champagne and I was feeling quite left out!

LOL... those dawgs.
kc, JAG's right... a typical all-out meal at the inlaws involves a roast with salt and pepper, mashed potatoes, canned corn, cold spinach dip, maybe a ham. Then there will be about six desserts to choose from... all frozen Mrs. Smiths etc.
Sometimes a salad... lettuce and tomato and assorted bottled dressings. If they serve wine it's very pink, sweet, and inexpensive.
When I have the dinner here, I cook wonderful food, they bring tons and TONS AND TONS of crap.... I can't get it all heated at the same time, very little counter space... it's sooooo much and so bland, yet salty.
And I end up spending a fortune. Have I whined enough yet?

LOL cracking up here. My grandma used to do the same thing. We hated to have Thanksgiving at my dad's parents...because grandma would always use frozen pies...and mind you, this was back in the 60's and they weren't nearly as good as they are now. Mom's mom lived out in the country and made everything from scratch....we always begged to go to her house for dinner.

Speaking of wine..did the lady of the house tell you how many bottles she had to carry out to the trash on Friday? She said she was glad the guys ran early because her trash was clanging as she was taking it out...LOL
